Cap friendly is a wonderful resource but doesnt give a 100% accurate state of each teams cap situation. In fact with the Ritchie transaction they are on pace to have the ability to optain around 5 mill in cap space at the deadline. It is called cap space agrument. For anyone who is a member on this site to explain the daily ins and outs of the salary cap would be a very hard task as it is extremely complicated. The Ritchie waiver deal wasnt about sending him to the minors, it was about being able to send his money to the minors whenever they want. The fact that he cleared waivers means the leafs have a window of time/games played where Richie doesnt need to clear waivers again to be sent down. It gives the team financial control of a 1 way contract to send a player down without losing the player off waivers. Also its a misconception that being put on waivers means the player is being sent to the minors, although it often happens this way. Waivers is one transaction and being sent to the minors is a second transaction.
