Edmonton Blockbuster

Description
Edmonton gets upgrades at every position for a cup run along with some long term cap relief assuming Klinger is just a rental. Stars get another first round pick and a few quality young players and have Barrie to recover some of the lost offense. Kailer gets a fresh start. If he can’t find his groove with JRob and Hintz he’s a lost cause. Kivi and Faksa can go with Comeau where they belong. The fact that Bones still feeds Faksa minutes after how bad he’s been this year is mind boggling

Here's the thing:
Tyson Barrie heavily relies on McDavid for defense AND OFFENSE. He is below average offensively and defensively with Connor McDavid.

GF% Barrie without McDavid: 45.45%
GF% Barrie with McDavid: 57.14%

What's worse? McDavid does better without him.
GF% McDavid without Barrie: 61.54%

what'd you say he's better 5v5?
Only 1 goal 5v5 out of his 3 goals this season
points 5v5? tied with DUNCAN KEITH and less than CODY CECI.

Why do you think Bouchard was elevated to the top pair with Nurse? EXACTLY BECAUSE BARRIE CAN'T PLAY DEFENSE WITH NURSE.

You need to look at a larger sample size. You do know that Barrie was in this league before last October, right? He's been one of the league's elite offensive producers for the better part if a decade, long before he arrived in Edmonton.

He has been producing a lot of points from playing with one superstar after another, MacKinnon, Matthews, McDavid, Draisaitl. Besides, we're talking about now, it doesn't matter if he lead defenseman in points last year with getting assists on the PP all the time if he can't do it now.

You should do your own research rather than just parroting what you read here: Barrie doesn't rely on the powerplay for offense. Over the past 3 seasons (18-19 to 20-21) he was 6th in the NHL for 5v5 points among defensemen:

Carlson: 94
Burns: 84
Josi: 82
Chabot: 82
Reilly: 78
Barrie: 77
Letang: 76
Nurse: 76

That's elite production, and Barrie playing with 3 teams over that timeframe.

Let's also look at goal scoring, shall we?

Barrie is 72nd in goal scored, even strength with 9. Tied with Tyler Myers, Brendan Smith and Jake Muzzin and less than Joel Edmundson, Anton Stralman, Carson Soucy, Sean Walker.
Nurse has more goals than him even-strength in one season alone.

Conclusion: Barrie gets assists in goals by players like MacKinnon, Landeskog, Matthews, Marner, McDavid, Draisaitl and you call that elite production. Y'know, there is a reason why he lead defenseman in points, yet never got a Norris vote

And that reason is that he's only average defensively, nothing to do with his offensive acumen. The guy literally has been among the best and most consistent offensive blue liners for a decade, I can't believe I have to explain this to you. This is common knowledge in the hockey community.

FYI your numbers are wrong or from a different period. In the 3 year timeframe given for my points figures, here are the same guys and their goals scored:

Carlson: 26
Burns: 18
Josi: 23
Chabot: 21
Reilly: 20
Barrie: 19
Letang: 21
Nurse: 24

He's right in the range of the other elite offensive defensemen. Including all defensemen, Barrie ranks 14th in 5v5 goals scored.

Regarding strength of teammates, I note that only 3 of these 8 had a higher IPP than Barrie (which shows a player's involvement in the play): Josi, Carlson and Chabot.

So should we make the same claim about Carlson, Makar, Letang, Reilly, McAvoy, Fox, Hedman, etc? They all play with elite forward talent too. Should we throw out their assists?

If he was "average defensively" he would have gotten atleast one vote. The only thing Tyson Barrie is consistent now, is getting -1 every game.

We are talking about Klingberg vs Barrie now right? and how does his even-strength point totals from before help determine who is better NOW?

Carlson, Makar, Letang, Reilly, McAvoy, Fox, Hedman can all score goals and play good defense, with or without an elite forward group in front of them. Barrie can't now. THATS MY POINT.
You also said Barrie is way better at offense than Klingberg. Well, they both have 9 EVG last 3 seasons.

And Drew Doughty has just 5. He must suck.

(Now do you see how stupid it looks to be rating defensemen solely on their ability to score goals?)

First, I did also say Barrie sucks at defense.
Second, Doughty is 32. He still has more goals than Barrie last three seasons with 19, besides the fact he's two years older.

The only reason I went to 5v5 goalscoring is to prove that Barrie sucks defensively and how a chunk of his points come with playing with superstars

Goalscoring doesn't prove anything vis-a-vis defensive ability.

The only irrelevant thing is that you refer to season he's had three years before to prove that Barrie is good now

atleast that's better than looking at his prime and signing him only based on that when he is already really old

He's not really old. And I was looking at the 3 most recent complete seasons. That's not ancient history.

I wasn't referring to Barrie, just referring to how you look at players at from how they performed 3 year before
