Thinking outside the box with Carey Price trade

Description
DISCLAIMER: This only is hypothetical IF Price comes back from injury and plays well like he did prior to this season and the trade happens at the TDL.

- ARI/EDM's portion of Price's actual dollars owed is 7.818M each spread out over 4 years so approx 1.954M actual dollars owed per year. (2.625M x 4 years of cap hit though)

- I included Klefbom only for Arizona to place him on IR so that they can use his cap to reach the cap floor next year. IF this isn't the case, we can just remove him from the deal. I was only trying to sweeten ARI/EDM side with some dead cap/cap relief for either of them next year but its not necessary to the deal here so we can remove it if not wanted.

Breakdown:

ARI gains:
Carey Price's contract cap hit 2.625M/Year, Klefbom, Yamamoto and a CAR 3rd 2022.

EDM gains:
Carey Price @ 2.625M/Year and a TB 4th round pick.

MTL Gains:
Ladd, Koskinen, EDM 1st 2022 and MTL 2nd 2024 (From ARI)

***Habs fans: we are not competing this year or next so Koskinen and Ladd don't affect the rebuild at all. Carey Price will have only 2 years left at that point. 5.25M is a lot of dead cap for two years but we'll hopefully have a young cheap team and not even reaching the cap ceiling anyway so its not a big deal.

Shane Wright will be in the 1st year of his RFA contract in the last year of Price's. Bedard will still be on his ELC. ;)

If the Oilers are getting Price at 2.625 they are giving up more than one 1st round pick and Yamamoto. Even at half retained they are giving up at least 2 1sts

rolling eyes

Come on now......It won't nearly be as bad as some make it out to be but a 1st and 2nd is a solid return for essentially money and cap space we don't need during a rebuild. Molson has the money and Habs will have the cap space for the foreseeable future with a rebuild. If you think teams are paying two 1sts, I don't know what to tell you.

If you think the Habs are selling low on Price at 75% retained you clearly not a Habs fan.

Habs are retaining 50%, not 75%. The additional 25% is from Arizona, not Montreal so the Habs are not gaining the extra 25% of benefit from this deal. Arizona is.

Also selling low??? Habs are getting a 1st and a 2nd rounder out of this deal. That is a solid return. In exchange they losing only cap space and money. Two things they don't need during a rebuild.

And relax with the allegiance slander, I'm as much a Habs fan as you are buddy.

You are getting a 1st + 2nd but we can easily get that by retaining just 2 mil and taking cap back, like you did with Koskinen. At half retained Price has enough value to warrant getting 2 1sts + Yamamoto then you add on the cap dump of Koskinen then we get the 2nd. So yes your selling low on Price by about a 1st. Neither Montreal or Arizona are getting the 25% benefit, Edmonton is, which if I am the Arizona GM I am asking for a 1st or equal prospect for as well since the cap hit is 4 years long. Remember Price just carried a weak Montreal team to the SCF, imagine what he could do with a good team like Edmonton. Price at 8-8.5 Mil is a good deal, Price at 5.25 is a steal, Price at 2.625 has almost as much value as Vasilevsky or Hellebuyck at full cap hit. Price is still regarded as a top 10 goalie in the league.

I saw a lot of those trade and I dont understand why Mtl will keep 5,25M for Price and if they sign, example, Koskinen next year at the same 4,5M, the cap hit for a worst goalie than Price will cost 9,75M... At this price, I keep Price and dont help a team to win a cup, except if I have young prospect and 1st round... On that case only a late 1st...

Price is going to be 35
Price has injury history
Price has mental health issues
Price's contract is buyout proof
Price's stats have not been good save for a couple recent playoff runs.
price has an NMC

What team is going to pay full value for that? No one! Only a few teams have cap space to add a player at the cap you suggest. Only a few teams have the need for a goalie like Price. Price has an NMC so Habs can't just ship him anywhere. The negotiation is very slim for the Habs. Whats the alternative? Keep price through a rebuild? Buy him out? Habs don't have a ton of options with this player.

But who cares what I think...... if the Habs get a bajillion 1sts and prospects, i ain't going to complain.... But I don't think that's realistic. You think Price is worth more and I think he's worth less. We won't know so until it happens, you are neither wrong nor right. Just like me. So its just opinion and not facts at this point. You have no idea what Price is REALLY worth. Just an opinion based on.......nothing. Just like mine.

If they can get more, by all means. Retaining salary is not an option. They HAVE to retain salary for this player. No team in the league wants CP for 10.5M or else Seattle could had him for free and sold him afterwards to another team. He is worthless @ 10.5M so he only gets value if we reduce his cap hit. Habs are only retaining the first 50%, so they only get the benefit from that much. Arizona is retaining the second 50% so they will get the benefit from their portion. Not MTL.

Koskinen is a UFA this year. Habs are only paying him to finish out this season (Unless they can trade him again and if so by all means). Next year its Allen and Primeau only. No Koskinen.

Habs are not taking on Koskinen because they want him. They're doing it only to help facilitate the trade with EDM since they'll want to get rid of 1 of their 2 current goalies. Money in, money out for both teams.

That's fair, I respect that. I apologize for my cynicism and saying you must not really be a Habs fan, I have ran into quite a few people on here claiming to be Habs fans and they clearly aren't.

I mean unless they are just being facetious, don't think it has to do anything with being a fan or not man. Its about opinion of value which can differ from person to person. The beauty of it is no one can be "right" until it happens. Without proof, there is only opinion. We all only have opinions. Not facts. (About trade value)
