Yea thats not gonna work for the Oilers. Yamo is a good PKer and middle 6 guy. Not flushing all that draft capital for a soon to be 34 year old goalie.

I'll say it a million times. The oilers needs a younger goalie (24-28) who can be the starter for the longer term. I do not want either Smith or Koskinen back next year. Smith is proving to be unreliable in terms of his health and Koskinen has been way too inconsistent to be reliable over the last few seasons. Having said that, Koskinen has been great this year. Still letting in muffins over game or two, but he's been shutting it down after those weak ones. So for the time being, we ride with Koskinen and Skinner. It makes no sense to move that many assets away for at best a marginal upgrade for this season, then be tied to another of Varlamovs contract.

Given that its unlikely a good young goalie won't be moved during the season, the best course of action for the Oilers is to start with a blank slate in the summer. Let Skinner ride backup and get a legitimate starter.

If the Oilers think they can make a long run in the playoffs. You get a guy that was number 3 in vezina voting last year, has an extra year on his contract. The poor numbers this year for varlamov has only been limited to 5 games, played in front of an AHL defense when the isles has covid issues and had no preseason to warm up for the season. Lehner got the same return two years ago at the TDL with similar performance metrics.

Koskinen is playing with an AHL defence right now with all the injuries the Oilers have. Oilers aren't making this trade. Sorry man

I think Varlamov makes sense as a potential TDL target for Edmonton, but not at that price.

I've said it before that I would gladly resign koskinen for 2.5 million and keep him, smith, and Skinner to fill the net until 1)skinner becomes their number 1 goalie or 2)Edmonton has the cap space from smith's contract expiring and the majority of the buyouts coming off the cap to sign an actual good goalie.

Over the last year Varlamov save percentage is a .915 koskinin is a .909 so yes by the eye varlomov is the superior goalie. however you have to look at the team as well in that time NYI have been the best defensive team in the league and play a very defensive mind set which has been proven to boost goalie stats.. mikko and smith however it has been well documented on here and by people who cover the game play behind what some people call the worst defensive team/ defense unit.... and they still have respectable numbers. only real knock on mikko is he lets a soft one in now and then and for smith injuries will be an issue.

yes small sample size this year but it does show how he has struggled to play with out that structure around him.

Oiler will let it run this year. next year they will have skinner as he has shown well and might look for a younger starter for him to challenge.

It’s not the worst idea, but I really think moving on from Koski is the play. 100% of people would have agreed before this season but now that he’s had a nice 15 game stretch people are changing their minds. I think that’s a bit of an overreaction. Oilers have been able to out score some of his flukes. But come playoff time, those weak goals early in games can kill a series for you. Goaltending has not been a problem this season, but we need an upgrade

Right now it sure seems like the right thing to do is trade koskinen for fluery but I can't see mike smith playing a full season next year, Skinner has to be on the big club next year because he will no longer be waiver exempt and the budget they have next year will not get you a better goalie than koskinen.
