Schmaltz would slot in as the Avs' 3C and unfortunately that isn't what they are looking for in a trade for Girard. They would want a bonified 2LW.

IMO that trade doesn't make sense for Vegas, the could just move smith and Janmark instead of moving a young center, two picks, and weakening their D. And what has Hayton done to be worth that much?

Tampa doesn't need Kessel, with their free cap they would probaly go after a RD instead.

Colorado wouldn't want Schmaltz, they need a wing not a center and shcmaltz wouldn't play over Mac of Kadri

And Anton Strarlman isn't worth a first anymore especially at that contract IMO

I was originally going to say that some team, just not Colorado, would probably pay a fair amount for Schmaltz, but then I looked at the contract structure and wow is there a lot of actual salary still due. That might be a turnoff for a lot of owners. I think AZ would be best keeping him for a couple more years and then trading him.

Selling off the ufas could be less than exciting since the can only retain on one more contract. I think you got it right on Kessel, as he'll bring the most value. Makes it tougher to get something of value for Stralman, but it us what it is.

It's funny this really brings into perspective how similar Patrick and Hayton are: very high former picks who for various reasons have declined in value

Patrick due to head injuries almost entirely

Hayton can't even hit 0.5 pts/g in the AHL

I see Patrick as a better player ultimately

Schmalz could easily be played at 2RW opposite Bura, just because they have a lot of (mostly top end) F depth doesn't mean he's worth less, value is value

Also it helps them avoid an overpay or over term situation with Kadri being a pending UFA which really hits the spot right now with their cap situation
