1.
STL
The purpose of this would be to allow the St. Louis Blues to trade Tarasenko to another team.
    DET
The structure of the trade would be a three-way trade.

Something like with what happened with David Savard.
      2.
      STL
      ARI
St. Louis would be responsible for 50% of Tarasenko's salary and 3.75 million of his cap hit.

The team acquiring Tarasenko would be responsible for 25% of his salary and 1.875 million of his cap hit.

The team that serves as a third-party would be responsible for the other 25%.
        3.
        STL
        ANA
The team that serves as a third party would get a couple of draft picks for taking on a portion of Tarasenko's salary over two years.

          Maybe 2 fourth round picks.

One pick from the blues and the other from the team that acquires Tarasenko.

The Savard deal was a 4th for $200.000 for a month a half. $1.8 million for two years will be much more expensive and Detroit already have Pánik on retention for two years. There are only 3 rentention slots available at any one time and Detroit will need the only two they have left for their own players this trade deadline.

Unless you wave a couple of first rounders under our nose it'll be a definitive no from Detroit.

Neither of these three teams would be getting Tarasenko.

They would be getting a couple of picks for taking on roughly 25% of his salary.

This trade for Tarasenko would happen when all three teams involved in the trade are on board (i.e. the trade deadline).

We're also talking about cap space that likely wouldn't be used at all during this season other than to facilitate a trade involving Tarasenko.

No team is ever going to get a couple of first round picks just to serve as a third-party in a trade with two other teams.

          Full stop.

          Don't be greedy.

Everyone is saying the Yotes, but realistically that last retention spot is going to Kessel. Because:

          1. It's his last year on his contract and he's obviously not re-signing
          2. Kessel half retained has way more value than Kessel full contract
          3. For the Tarasenko retention the highest they'll get is maybe a 3rd while Kessel can maybe get a 1st

This has nothing to do with cap space.

This has everything to do with the cap on retention slots.

Detroit have 5 players on expiring contracts that they possibly have to trade at the deadline, several of which may very well need to have salary retained to be traded for the right return.

They are NOT going to give up one of the only two retention slots they have for two years for a couple of 4th round picks. Detroit needs those retention slots for their own trades.

Then, make sure to vote for either Anaheim or Arizona.

Don't think Arizona will, two retention slots used already with one long term. Last one probably saved for Kessel.
Detroit has one used already with a bunch of UFAs that could be traded with retention. So it would have to be a significant payment.
Anaheim might or maybe San Jose or Columbus.
Buffalo and Ottawa could be candidates as well. Buffalo still needs to hit the cap floor and likely could use some more pieces for the rebuild.
I wouldn't see any team taking two fourths for retention though, minimum probably a second round pick at least four three two years of retention.
