Why would the Kings who are trying to compete this season give up an NHLer they signed last year for prospects that wouldn't even make the top 30 of their deep pool of prospects.

Dauphin is the Habs worst center prospect, The Kings have 14 better center prospects/rookies than him likely slotting in after Helenius.

Fairbrother was good but declined with the Silvertips, it is not a sure thing he even makes it past the AHL. He would likely be the Kings 8th best LD prospect after Ben Meehan.

This isn't hyperbole, the Kings have a lot of prospects, and these don't move the needle.

He was 20 last season putting him as one of the oldest players on the ice in the WHL, he halved his goal totals from 10 in 2018-19 to 1 last season. He's a decent defensive defenseman but projects as best as a bottom pairing LD, which is pointless to a team that has plenty of LD prospects but lacking a single top pair LD prospect.

The point you are missing is if the Kings are competing for a playoff spot how does this trade make them better this season and what is the value of Fairbrother when he won't be NHL ready for years, and would be behind Bjornfot, Andersen, Clague, Kirsanov, Nousiainen, Brickley, and Moverare (all have played against men)? There is no logic to this trade from the Kings point of view.
