1. Vegas - should take first with ease. Traded away a big piece of their leadership and identity in Fleury, but it's a veteran team that should be able to weather it. No real weaknesses, but still not good enough at centre to win the Cup.
* - Really, I think you could put Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle, and Edmonton's names in a hat right now, they are fairly even on paper.
2. Calgary - get an initial boost from Sutter, and Markstrom should have a bounce back year, IF he stays healthy (if not, they miss the playoffs). Still, it feels like a fragile group that will crack at the first sign of adversity, so they are my wild card team in the this division. Could finish anywhere from 1st to 6th.
3. Vancouver - I believe their defense will be a lot better this year, and even if it's only average, they have the deepest goaltending group in the division and one of the better forward groups. Even with suspect coaching, they should be good enough to contend for a playoff spot in a weak division. And with how this core performed in the bubble, once they get there, they are a good bet to win a round or two.
4. Seattle - No top line forwards, but plenty of cap space to add as the season progresses. Kind of the opposite side of the coin from the Oilers, and I'll give the edge to the team with the much better goaltending.
5. Edmonton - I'm a fan of Holland's, but his work so far in Edmonton is confusing to me. Shows a commitment to better team defense in hiring Tippett, and then essentially goes about building a team that contradicts his coach's philosophy. Defense is too heavy on the "offense", their bottom 6 forward group is AHL caliber and they might well have the worst goaltending in the NHL. And they are smashed right up against the cap, to boot. A 150 point season from McDavid is the only thing that will keep this team in playoff contention.
6. LA Kings - could be the surprise of he division. The teams at the top better get their business done, because it won't be long before the Kings are winning Cups again.
7. Anaheim - trending the right direction, but still have a long ways to go.
8. San Jose - trending in the wrong direction. In the same class as Arizona and Buffalo, but with a dimmer outlook.
