He's good but for the rags should they give that much up for a rental? Or if they tried extending him (which they could do but it would come at a price of losing other valuable pieces) they'd have 16m tied up in trouba and rielly and I think it's pretty apparent that neither of those contracts will age well (and already hasn't for Trouba).

This kind of stuff makes us look crazy.

"That much" is a player that's played a career 53 games in the league and is still a "what if".. opposed to New York getting a bonafide #1 defenceman? I can't see how that's a loss for New York at all.

Leafs would need more, they need centre prospects. So maybe something starting around Miller + Chytil for Rielly makes sense (extension in place). But Rielly isn't the type of defenceman that New York needs so it doesn't make sense for them to even be in on him.

Yeah, that's fair. But I'd argue (and you pointed it out) that NYR doesn't need a #1D especially since they're soon going to be paying 2 guys #1 money and one of them has really struggled but has an NMC so is going to be terribly difficult to move. I also don't agree that Rielly is a bonafide #1 dman. I'm fairly confident that I could find 30+ dmen that are better than him, but that's not to say he isn't really good and valuable. I just think he'll end up getting an 8x8ish contract and it will age extremely poorly a few years in. Miller is still an unknown quantity but seems like he's got a good shot at turning into a top 4 dman based on his progression thus far, and the team control / cheapness is absolutely a factor for many teams.

At the end of the day I don't really think this trade makes much sense for either team, but it makes more sense to me from a Leafs perspective if they choose that they're not going to extend him and don't want to let him walk for nothing.

What's the extension?? Fox will get a Makar deal. Zibanejad needs to be re-signed. Strome?? The Rangers seem to think Georgiev is great and he needs to be re-signed. Kakko. Kratsov. Can't lose the best part of the Buchnevich trade. NYR can't trade for him for the same reason TML would trade him. Can't afford his extension...

But to say it’s an overpay from NYR or the Leafs need to add is simply ridiculous. Morgan Rielly was/can be a top defensemen in the league. Miller will likely never be close to that.
