Demers makes sense as cheap RHD insurance. But McLeod and Ryan should be in over Turris and Filppula. Also no ARB rights for Yamo, he shouldn't get much more than what the two young RFA's in NJ just got after last season's underwhelming numbers.

I could see Holland making most of these UFA signings, but I don't see him going after Gusev. This team is trying to win a playoff game, they're getting bigger and stronger and Gusev doesn't fit that mold.

I like Gusev. He's got a good shot.
I wish the oilers would give turris a shot in the top 6 on the wing. He's also still got a good shot. If Turris still has something left at the NHL level, it's his ability to score. Using him as a defensive center has never been his thing.

Anyways, I don't like giving up a 2nd in moving koski out, to just use that cap for guys riding the bench. I'd rather they wait and move him at the deadline for either a good D or Goalie on an expiring deal.

At the beginning of this past season Smith was injured and Holland screwed up the backup situation repeatedly, and it meant that Koskinen had to play every game of a wicked schedule - 12 games in 24 nights traveling thousands of miles through 4 timezones - which isn't something ANY goalie can stand up under. It wasn't fair to Koskinen but Tippett had little choice but to keep throwing him over the boards, so his results were poor over that stretch. I don't fault Koskinen for that, he did his best in an impossible situation.

If you look at his last 2 seasons combined without those 12 games to get a look at how he performs under normal circumstances, his save percentage is .916.

I can't agree with your Buffalo trade for this reason.

Huh?

Neither guy has a good shot. Gusev has a career shooting percentage of just 7.4%, while Turris has shot 9.3% over the past 3 seasons. Of course, these numbers were pumped somewhat by PP time (something neither guy would get much of in Edmonton), if you look at their 5v5 shooting percentages it gets even worse: 7.9% for Turris and a paltry 6.1% for Gusev.

Perhaps you were thinking of someone else?

Nope, I'm talking about the right guys.

I think it's a bit unfair to establish who has a good shot or not based on the stats that you just mentioned.
Let's take Draisaitl for instance. Based on his goal production, everyone seems to believe that he's a sniper with a great shot. He's a great goal scorer but I think his actual shot is pretty average. He's often in really great positions to score that it doesn't need to be great to do so.

Now with Turris, he's got a good hard accurate shot and a good one timer as well. Even oilers radio guy Bob Stauffer has mentioned how Turris has one of the best shots amongst the forward group. And Bob gets the luxury to watch them at practice. I remember a game this season where Turris went bar down on a one timer and thought wow. Being a right shot guy who can shoot, he'd look good on the wing of a play maker.
Turris's best years were as an offensive player. God knows why everyone wants to makes him a defensive center.

I hate all advanced stats. I think they all have some truth as well as some faults to them.

The fact that you think shooting percentage is an advanced stat tells me everything I need to know. On top of taking Bob Stauffer as an authority on pro scouting!

Lol. Never said I think shooting % is an advanced stat.
Bob has seen these guys play way more than any fan. You don't have to be a pro scout to recognize if a player has a good shot, or is a good skater or good passer.
But I'll move along now.
Cheers

Cool. You know who's seen these guys play WAY MORE than Bob Stauffer? Dave Tippett and his staff - and they didn't both to even dress Turris most of the time. Using a radio show host as your appeal to authority is hilarious.
