Take out the scraps and add Eklund and you’ve got yourself a starting point.

Gonna sound like a broken record to some - but Eklund isn't worth losing for Eichel with the baggage he has. Merkley is nearly just a valuable and Ozzy as well. Basically 2/4 of our top prospects generally. Not saying Eichel isnt DESERVING of a good return but that situation in Buffalo is too messy to make losing a poential start in Eklund who we lucked out in getting. It would be naïve to trade him.

I'd offer to change Gambrell for a better value in quality but Eklund is a no go (like Byfield in LA)

SJ calls BUF and says, "Hey, we're interested in Eichel. We're willing to include any prospect but Eklund."
Do you not negotiate, or do you try to work around it?

Sabres are going to wait on Eichel.. what is the rush.. let him get health and then trade him. None of the trades make any sense until he is healthy.

Okay, but you can only do that so many times.
You only realistically have half a dozen serious suitors. Now you're down to five and everyone knows SJ is out.
You're running out of options and SJ was the one pushing the price up.
Another team drops out because they aren't giving up the one top prospect you are stuck on either.
Another team drops out because you took too long to decide and they signed another player.

Each of the few remaining teams has one or two prospects they will not move. Are you ready to look at different options yet?

That's basically what is happening right now. Eventually, Buffalo is going to compromise or they are going to send Eichel for his surgery and do it all over again next year.
If Eichel comes back and has a bad season (or worse, an injury), the return is going to get worse.
    Willing to take that risk?

No they have to do it this year cause I’m pretty sure his no move clause kicks in next year. Anaheim has got more intriguing pieces as does a lot of other teams Eklund is really the main piece that Buffalo would want from SJS.

Forgot about that, but the point I'm trying to make is that it's time to seriously consider different offers. No Eklund, no Zegras, no Suzuki, etc.
You aren't getting "that one guy" from each team. Who are the 2nd or 3rd guys and how does it affect the overall package? Do you go for a young roster player as a main piece instead? Do you pick up a 1st and a guy you can flip for a 1st instead of 2-3 1sts from a single team?
There are more possibilities and it's fun to look for, and debate them. Every conversation can't end with "no Eklund, no Eichel" because that's not the reality of the situation if you hope to extract maximum value.

For Anaheim, they have others such as Drysdale (unlikely) Comtois and others and Montreal has players like KK and Norlinder as starting points. If the Sabres can’t work a deal with another team, they can always circle back around. I also think that New York has the highest chance for him cause they have a lot of very good pieces Buffalo wants.
