Weber retires he's retired. Why trade for a retired, non-LTIR, player???? He'll sit on Montreal's LTIR and collect his 12 mil....

Montreal isn't gonna let him just sit on their LTIR to finish his term. Its a headache for them every offseason and a huge bargaining chip for them over Nashville.

Montreal played by the rules and was cheated. Who cares if their players are "nice people". Every team has ****ty people, these players were caught, that's the only difference.

Montreal doesnt really have a choice. He either retires or he doesnt. They can trade his contract anywhere, but its not gonna come with assets lol.

NSH won't do anything like this -- honestly, they're closer to a rebuild than contending, so if he retires it shouldn't affect them too badly. And Weber knows about the recapture stuff -- he's not the guy to put that on a team so he's more likely to just sit on LTIR than do it to NSH in the final years of the deal. So MTL would also have to convince him to retire in order to have the leverage, knowing he would decimate NSH if he retires in the final year of the deal. I don't see it. And I don't see Poile bending.

Yeah ok. Except that as i said, its a headache for them if he doesn't retire. They could easily persuade him to retire and ensure he is paid his $12M in other deals. Nashville then gets $4.9M cap penatly until 2025-26. Montreal has no incentive to do Nashville any favours. Hence why Nashville has to pay huge for 5 years of $4.9M cap hit. Look at what Toronto had to pay for someone to take Marleau for 1 year....

$18M over the Cap.

Toronto was a good team, they "choked" but Montreal still beat them.
Winnipeg got swept, they weren't a bad team, credit goes to Montreal for dominating the whole series.
Vegas was one of the Cup favourites, what planet are you on?

Then eat up 5 years of $4.9M cap hit. Weber nor Canadiens owe you anything to get you out of this. 5 years from now, you could have a contender and be handicapped $4.9M in a "All in" year. Take that chance if you want to be rebuilding for 5 years.

Regardless, if I'm Weber, I'm collecting my $6m this year -- I don't see him retiring this year.

But this will literally never happen -- NSH isn't paying this.

Other positions with the team. Once he isn't a player, it opens the door to other deals as well. Not to mention Molson could easily pay him for advertisement deals. Montreal would have no issue giving him $12M if he was that worried about that money.

Ok, so Marleau was one 1st round pick for $6M cap.

What do you think 5 years at $4.9M is worth? Maybe Nashville rebuilds and doesn't need that space now. But you can't know 3, 4, or 5 years from now...

The Marleau deal literally has nothing to do with this...

TOR needed cap space and paid the 1st for it, not CAR -- and then they bought him out. That wouldn't be what NSH would do in this situation if they did in fact trade for him.

There is no guarantee of Weber retiring, so this is all moot until that's a certainty. So there is no interest from NSH.

Should note... $4.9M is with 5 years left...

$6.1M is with 4 years left...
$8.2M is with 3 years left...
$12.2M is with 2 years left...
$24.6M is with 1 year left....

So how committed are you to Nashville being awful for the next 5 years? and how awesome are the Houston Predators going to be in 6 years?

1) If Weber retires, Nashville enters an overdue rebuild.

2) If Weber is medically incapable of playing, he'll go to LTIR. If Weber goes onto LTIR, Montreal can't really do anything about it as long as Weber is medically incapable of playing hockey. You can try and pressure him to retire in which case see #1. Nashville isn't a cup contender with current makeup so trading futures to continue to not be a cup contender is illogical and only sets them back further.

Dead cap isn't a bargaining chip against a team with tons of capspace and in need of a rebuild. If (and it's a big if) Nashville needed the capspace, they'd likely be more willing to pay someone to take Duchene and open the capspace vs acquiring Weber.

We have tons of capspace with the need to get younger. We'd likely pay someone to take Duchene/Joey or accept reality and trade Josi/Forsberg while they still have good value and enter the rebuild that is overdue. The team needs an overhaul. Paying to acquire Weber only ensures a status quo that is already bad. Trading futures only makes it worse.

That makes sense short term. In 4-7 years, you still going to be ok missing 4.9M to $7.9M?
