Description
According to LeBrun, Seattle is passing on Bean and Nino and selecting Geekie from Carolina. Surprising to me as I was sure Bean would be taken given Francis' history, but I guess with some of the other UFA signings and players selected in Expansion (Olek, Larsson, Gio, Dunn, Fleury, etc.) there's not really room for Bean. I'm pretty happy today as I think this is best case for the Canes.

Geekie is a good young player with some potential and I think he'll do very well in Seattle but he's replaceable. Biggest thing with him was his contract being so cheap over next couple of years. Bringing back McGinn here to fill that bottom 6 and PK role, hopefully his contract isn't much bigger than what's listed here.

Cleared space by moving Gardiner (cap dump situation, used DET here but could be other teams like BUF, ANA, etc. who are still rebuilding and have cap space - player has value when healthy but too risky with his injury history so for the sake of argument you ship him with a couple of picks and whatever team takes him on can flip him at TDL or next season for more assets if he's healthy and plays well) and Nino (player has value but Canes need an upgrade in their top 6 and he likely won't be back next year).

Brought in Saad and Tatar who should be good fits in this system and greatly improve the top 9 (essentially over Nino and Foegele). Think contract values are pretty fair - Saad has a similar contract now and gives him some decent term while on a competitive team entering their prime window. Tatar has had some up and down seasons so while this is a pay cut I think it's dictated by his play and the market. Plus gives him an opportunity to rebound on a contending team where his play and style fits in with approach.

With Bean being back, I wanted an improvement over Hakanapaa. I don't love Miller (other 3RHD options might be guys like Stetcher, Demelo, Nutivaara, Jensen, Bear, TVR but I don't think those guys are as likely to be moved or may get taken by Seattle and I have a hard time seeing Francis making a deal with Carolina) but on a 1 year retained deal I think it could work and if not they can make a move at TDL to improve that area. I'm expecting Bean to take a step forward next year after seeing what it takes to play consistently in the NHL last season and taking that into a full off-season of prep with less COVID restrictions during training camp.

Lastly, moved Foegele (who is looking for a top 6 opportunity somewhere else) for Kuemper who I think would be a good 1B behind Ned. Included retention on the deal so feel free to add picks where needed on either side to make it more realistic.

Would not be surprised something going to Seattle for not taking Bean.

I'm 50/50 on that. If they did I'd be interested to see what it was, hopefully nothing more than a late round pick. I doubt Francis would have a reasonable request when making any deals with Carolina and I don't think their front office would accept an unreasonable request honestly. It may have come down to their just being much better / sure thing defensive options and Bean would've ended up as their 8th best D. Geekie fits in with their strategy - solid bottom 6 player with some upside on a 2 way contract that's very cheap and team controlled for the future.

I highly doubt it. With some of the other picks being leaked, I think it much more likely that Seattle prioritized Geekie because he was under contract and is a right handed center.

Sounds like more leaked reports are coming out that the Canes have been trying to trade Bean over the past year, without great offers. DFO Frank reported on his pod that Canes tried to deal to Habs who basically told Canes to pound sand - Bean isn’t a top 4 defenseman.

      I hate revisionist history, but…

I think I would have rather had Haydn Fleury on the squad and exposed along with Bean and the rest. Hakanpaa was good and all, but I just don’t see that he made that much of an impact. Sounds like Francis is taking Haydn from ANA, so maybe we wouldn’t have lost Geekie.

I think I’m actually more upset about losing geekie over Bean, but not by a lot.

Totally agree with you on the Fleury part - thought that was one of the panic moves made by this front office which they have seemed to avoid the last few years for the most part.

Geekie has grown to be one of my favorites but realistically I think this is best case. Bean didn't look great last year but still has some really high upside which I would've felt really bad about losing him. Geekie has a great contract and is a very solid bottom 6 player but I think he's much easier replaceable compared to Bean if he does take the next step next year.

Yeah, I think a lot on non-Canes fans over value Bean. So many mocks had Bean in their top 4 but he just isn't ready yet

I agree, I like Geekie more, but it is mostly because of his personality and not really on-ice.

Have had this convo a lot on here. Not totally against it but would rather keep the trades separate. If that return isn’t enough for DET taking on Gardiner than sub out a different team to dump him. Stevie hasn’t done one of those cap dump asset acquisition moves yet but I would think he does soon as long as it’s a short term dump to keep beefing up picks and prospects while they continue to rebuild.

The Gardiner deal is just fine (unless an even better one shows up). It's just that Foegele would be a very good fit here and since he has requested a trade you're not getting overpaid for him. This is equivalent of Detroit offering Svechnikov +2nd + 4th for him and I'd be surprised if you got more anywhere else. Combining the deals would also secure the yes from Detroit instead of you having to wait for Detroit negotiating other deals before agreeing.

In this scenario I like getting Kuemper retained (if that’s realistic) as there’s really no need for Svech

This. They could have used Bean as trade bait otherwise unlike Carolina trying to trade Bean, Seattle could take salary back (makes a trade much easier) and picked up another Geekie plus more. Use Jake Bean as trade spice. Seattle has little trade bait at the moment on their roster so there must have been a dozen side deals that we havent heard yet.

If true thats a missed opportunity. Didnt really understand the Kraken passing over Demelo as well. Appleton is good but Demelo is a legit top4 today at low money with 3 year term unlike Bean whom had promise

Yep I don’t get at least a handful of the moves that were made by Francis and co. Maybe there’s more to it with guys like Demelo, haven’t heard about side deals yet other than a few reporters saying their team didn’t make a side deal.

They still have a ways to get to the floor though so I’m sure more moves are coming.
