Some thoughts:
Stastny is likely getting more than $2M. I would expect the Jets to go to $3 on a 1 year deal, and given he’s still a viable top 9 forward with amazing leadership qualities, I expect a few teams in on him.
Laine isn’t likely to sign a multi year deal for less than $8M. Why do I think that... goal scorers get paid and we have a flat cap. He has Arb rights and can get a $5-7M deal for one year to get back to the table 12 months from now, possibly with 40+ goals. No way he sells himself short.
The Laine trade. I rarely support the ‘and Columbus hangs up the phone’ comments, (mostly because that opinion is lazy and overused), but in this case, I don’t think there is a counteroffer, the initial offer is so low that it would be an insult.
I’m going to assume that Columbus doesn’t hang up, and speculate what it would take to pry him away.
Looking at Leafs assets: I think I needs to start with either Robertson or Sandin. A top line prospect. Then add a mid-tier prospect Hallander is a good option, Hirvonen or maybe Niemela. And then add a future 1st, which CLB assumes will be in the 25-32 range.
Those 3 assets might get the deal done with Laine at a ‘low’. If he pots 50 and keeps working on his 200ft game (he’s shown improvement there), the price would be similar to what Marner would cost to give up, possibly more, as Laine might be a bit cheaper.
