Hyman underpaid like always
How is $4.5M underpaid? Because he's asked for $6M? Players always ask for high numbers in talks. It's called negotiating. You don't go into your job asking to be paid less than what you want do you?
This $6M number being thrown around is ludicrous and if he gets it or close to it from anyone it's a massive overpay. So you're saying Hyman is similar in value to Nylander? Don't think so. Pastrnak? Hell no. Brayden Point? **** no. Horvat? Nope. Ehlers? Not a chance. Gallagher? Nope. Josh Anderson? Nope.
Those are all players between $5.5M - $7M which is the range considered for Hyman. I love me some Zach Hyman but he's not as valuable as those players and shouldn't be paid like it either. Many people are gonna sit there and say "well he works so hard every shift that he deserves it" but since when does working hard and not producing matter? Everyone talks about Matthews and Marner not producing in playoffs but look at Hyman's production: 1 point (a goal) in 7 games this season, 3 points (1G, 2A) in 5 games last season, 1 point (a goal) in 7 games the year before, 4 points (1G, 3A) in 7 games the year before), and finally 4 points (1G, 3A) in 6 games the year before. Hyman's never had more than 1 goal in a playoff series and this year the goal he did get the entire play was Marner going through the Montreal defence and Hyman happened to barely touch the puck before it crossed the line.
Want a player that works his tail off and produces about the same as Hyman? Look at Connor Brown. Who makes $3.6M or 4.42% of the cap. That's the best comparable. So why is Hyman all of a sudden worth north of $5M and close to $6M like he asks? Market value is right around $3.6M per season. I've projected that he gets $4.75M AAV with massive signing bonuses to keep him in Toronto. But even that's an overpayment to keep him from going to UFA.
