As a Coyotes fan I can tell you I don't think this is a fair trade or a good one for the Coyotes. For a few reasons, 1st is that Hayton is 2 years younger than Patrick and has none of his injury history. 2nd is that Hayton does not need to be protected in the upcoming draft where as Patrick does, so the Coyotes are losing expansion flexibility. 3rd, is that Hayton has another year on his ELC remaining unlike Patrick who is an RFA at the end of this season and given his injury history and play its a tough contract to figure out. So the Coyotes are losing cost certainty. 4th, I am not of the belief and neither are the Coyotes that Hayton needs a change of scenery. He hurt his shoulder at WJC last year and then Covid happened so he lost a lot of ice time and development and the same can be said of this year. He's 20, just needs time to play and grow. He's too talented and young to cut bait.. even if Patrick was the return.
I think a better trade would be one of the two 2nd rounders the Coyotes have in the upcoming draft and a prospect (Similar to the Sam Bennet trade) for Patrick.
