I get this one. This speaks to me. Great pickup, MacLellan. Mantha is a proven top line wing who has shown he can be his team's best goal scorer. Steep price, but Mantha probably wasn't available until Detroit saw this offer. If Vrana and Laviolette weren't seeing eye to eye, then this is a good move to keep the Caps' top-six extremely skilled, and even add some size. With four postseasons left on his contract, Mantha should have more impact than the average late 1st round pick. But will he also make up for Vrana's playoff production?

They just added Michal Raffl for a 5th round pick. Raffl, like Vrana, has 8 career playoff points. Stone cold.

And I take back my comment from yesterday that a 3rd was cheap for Siegenthaler. I mean, yeah, normally, it would be. But after Carolina gave up Fleury for a B prospect and a 5th, landing a 3rd for Siegenthaler was a pretty solid move.

I think this trade is awesome. Capitals gave up a little more than I would like but they also dumped nearly 3m in dead cap space. Mantha imo is an upgrade and makes the capitals better today.

Yeah. Most of MacLellan's trades are to fill specific needs or to get specific players, so he's often willing to overpay a little. You look at a team like Montreal giving up a 7th for a half-retained Gustafsson and you figure they shopped around for the best available bargain, regardless of the return. But they're not all-in.
