Where is the best fit for Nikita Gusev

Description
Nikita Gusev has struggled this year under new coach Lindy Ruff. But I think there may be good fits for him on other teams. This post is just spit-balling some potential options

------

Goose never fit into Lindy’s system (that made Centers big part of rush) whereas he thrived in 2nd half last year under Hines/Nas’s system (which held centers back and let wings lead offensive attack).

He is great at puck-control, possession, passing. He can be very shifty, creative play-maker. Certainly useful on power-play. He is a good skater, but not a burner. Right-hand shot that plays LW and likes to cut in towards middle (why he is better in system with centers behind him so he has more space).

I think he would best fit in a situation where a team has a strong, defensive center on 3rd line, and he could match with another creative winger (similar to Gusev/Datsyuk/Kaprizov line from Olympics, or Gusev/Zacha/Bratt from from 2nd half last year).

Last season: goal differential (over 60 min) and Corsi For % (by lines)
On Hughes and Hischier lines: -0.37 and 40.3%
On Zajac and Zacha lines: +0.99 and 49.7%
Gusev / Zacha / Bratt line: +2.55 and 52.0%

In other words, he did better on Zajac/Zacha lines than he did in top-6 with Hischier and Hughes.

------

Cost - mid/late pick with 50% salary retained ($2.25 million AAV).

start with Washington, either D.C or state (= Seattle) in the expansion if the 1st option does not happen
would love to see Nik(ita) on the same line as Ovechkin

Pittsburgh needs a center I think
            Florida I had
Boston would be great fit...could play with Coyle and Kuhlman on 4th line.
Winnipeg is probably all set with forwards...think they add a d-man

Fantastic post here really good analysis 👍

Funnily enough TB probably is the best fit and I'm sure there's no leftover negativity given everything and with Kucherov out a PP wizard is just the ticket

Toronto as LW on either of the top lines with their dynamic up tempo system and it being a safe haven for skilled forwards with more understanding mgmt

            My unconventional pick:

He could take a bit of pressure of the young guys in Ottawa as they develop and play on a line with Anisimov and former linemate Dadonov as well joining Stutzle BTkach Chabot Bathy on the top PP unit to provide some much needed playmaking there

Only a year removed from Gusev almost leading his NHL team in scoring in less than 15 minutes of TOI like are people serious with malarkey like this??

Yes he's off to a slow start

NHLers who earn as much or more than Gusev who are scoring about as often as him so far this season:

Johansen, Duchene, NFoligno, Bonino, Hagelin, Silvferberg, EStaal, Coyle, Namestnikov, Debrusk, Clutterbuck, Kassian, etc.

Should they all go off to Russia?

Virtually none of them drive play as well as he does

The Penguins have alot of injured forwards so Gusev would be a replacement

Is it really malarkey to think he fits the best with the KHL? Almost leading the Devils in scoring last year with 44 points in 66 games isn’t exactly the biggest accomplishment.

            Sorry, I’m just being honest.

With the Wild, I think Gusev would be a good fit. We have 2 right handed shots in the whole forward group (Bjugstad and Hartman). Having a "scoring" right handed shot would help the PP a lot I believe. Yes we have Dumba and Spurgeon but they are more up top. Having a low one timer option I think would help a lot.

But with that said I dont think the wild are in a position of adding or subtracting right now. Wild are in the weird no mans land of playing better than expected.

            Not going to cost much.
            Late pick. Busted prospect. Whatever.
Does us no good blocking a roster spot for one of the kids.

@nhlfan10506 I’d be interested in hearing why he will now be free for other teams to sign?
