the devils have 2 options right now. they have a crap ton of cap space this offszn. they could either speed up the rebuild, and go hard on candidates like hall, hamilton, nugent hopkins, etc. to fill out their team. or they could take their time with the rebuild, and in the meantime recoup as many draft picks as possible and use their cap to obtain large contracts expiring in 2-3 years (which is when they will need to start spending on their young players).
i would go for the 2nd option. blackwood is only 24, hischier is 22, smith is 21, and hughes is just 20. there's plenty of time for the rebuild to settle in. in the meantime, as devils fans, we will have to get used to losing and hopefully getting some top 10 picks. in 2-3 years, when nico, jack, ty, dawson, alex, nolan, and mac are matured, we can hit hard in free agency. some of the contracts acquired can also be bought out, which the devils can take on but many other teams likely couldn't. of course not everyone can be bought out but those who can be will be. i chose to buy out players if it took away at least 30% of their cap hit. if it didn't, i kept them on the team.
also i went for majority contending / bubble playoff teams because I doubt teams in full rebuild will want to give up valuable picks
how's this to take on okposo? the 2nds will likely be pretty high up, certainly in the 30s both years. JJP had a stellar showing at the juniors, he's an intriguing prospect who wld excel in jersey i think.
The islander may do that trade but it wouldn't be at the deadline since they dont have much picks to spend on rentals. If anything it would be offseason to sign a FA. Ducks dont need to shed salary as they're still rebuilding so i dont see them giving picks away. If the sabres are going into a rebuild they are not going to make that trade but if they for some reason think they can contend next year then i think it would be one second and a third max. Dont think FLA would give that much up for strålman since the only player they would trade for is hall and they have slightly over 4 mil in cap space. dont think calgary would do that since they might shake everything up in the offseason. Could see the oilers making a play like that since they would use some players in free agency to acquire. Benning is not going to move picks for cap dumps or he would have done so already. Especially for only one more year left. Sharks are rebuilding and have much worse contract to worry about so they pass. I think tampa passes bc seattle would def take johnson for a first since he is still a serviceable bottom 6 player. The blues are not going to do that since they dont need to shed cap that badly. The wild would do that but i would assume for suter instead since it frees up a protected expansion spot.
Cap dump trades appear to be coming in small bits at a time (instead of 1st for taking one big contract).
I would rather see some of those smaller deals and keep our powder dry for when we need it (or another team gets desperate in free agency, like Vegas last year).
