Imo the debate is Bear or Barrie. Barrie needs to be sheltered in key moments and can't PK. He got benched in the last few minutes against Winnipeg while Nurse - Larsson, Russell - Bear shut down the game. Broberg and Bouchard need to he sheltered in the future, not our top 2 RD. There's no room for him after this season, definitely not 2022-23

Barrie has come in and given the defense core instantaneous success as well as boosted Mcdavid and draisaitl's offense. Edmonton's puck moving is much better than last year without klefbom. How do you walk away from that if you can get him for 5.5 million on a 3 Year term? 4 year term I agree to hell with barrie.

You would be overpaying hes worth 3.5. You might want to try David Savard he wants to go to a different team.

There is absolutely room for Barrie provided they can find somebody who can play with Mcdavid for 3.5Million, Darnell Nurse resigns for 7 Million and jesse puljujarvi gets 3.2 million or under on his next deal.

It works financially, yes, but our defence will be very unbalanced. In 2022-23 assuming Klef is back, our defenceman would be: Nurse, Barrie, Klef, Bouch, Broberg, Larsson. You need 4 defensively capable defenseman to PK and log big minutes to shut down tight games with a 1 goal lead. As I said, Barrie gets benched when we have 1 goal leads late in the 3rd. Bouch and Broberg are too young and inexperienced to be relied on in those situations, and PK. That means 3 of our defenseman can't PK or be trusted to shut down a game. Bear can PK and be relied on defensively. Barrie is a defensive black hole , at this point in his career I highly doubt he turns into a capable defensive player. You can't have 3 sheltered/ 1 dimensional players/ passengers

Eventually Bouchard is going to have to step up, in 2022 he will have enough experience to be relied upon. in 21-22 Russell could play the right side if he had to. Samorukov plays both sides of the ice and so does Broberg both are very good defensively broberg especially has the agility to dance around both sides of somebody coming into the defensive zone.

There is no need to choose between them though. Plenty of room for both.

There's no logical reason to sign Barrie and trade Bear though.
