Description
There's extra money left in case Nuge wants more. Based on what Rishaug said, contract talks are in the $6 - 6.5mill range

Danault is not a 1C, he's a 2C. He would be a middle 6 C on our team. Allows us to stack McD and Drai on the 1st line with him at 2C. Also gives us insane depth when he's pushed to 3C. There's not much selection for great 3C's this summer. Maybe he could get more term with another team but I don't think this deal is unrealistic. He'd be more sheltered in Edmonton, and be able to focus on his game + not be relied on for 1st line production

If there was a productive veteran 3C that could play that role this year and next I'd be interested, but there are none imo. Maybe Staal if he signs for cheap. His production is at risk to fall off big time so I don't want to rely on him as a 3C for 2 years until a prospect takes that role

Martinez supplies veteran leadership. He knows how to win and is still able to physically lead by example. A great mentor for Bouch

A Koski + Jones package for Merzlikins has been discussed by multiple analysts. It sounds like Columbus is taking calls

Before you comment "CBJ decline.", actually consider what other teams would be interested in Merzlikins

What team needs a goalie for the future now. Most contenders already have their guy. Rebuilders usually have a prospect for the future and wouldn't want a 26 y/o "goalie of the future". Teams on the decline don't want to spend assets on a goalie like Elvis. I genuinely don't see another team that desperately needs him and would pay more than this. Maybe Columbus wants a center in return, but what team both needs a goalie, and has a surplus of top 6 centermen?

Also, consider that Merzlikins is a UFA next summer, and his stats are average this year

Skinner (Merzlikins isn't eligible for expansion which is key)

I will assume our free agents don't get selected by SEA and elect to test free agency. That only makes sense for them

Available: Kassian, Turris, Russell, Archibald, Neal

Between those 5, probably Archibald? They likely want to get paid to take on a bad contract or 2. Maybe they work with us because we have next to nothing to offer them besides that

Trading Jones and Stalock is important because it leaves them with only bad decisions. Maybe makes dumping a bad contract easier

If for some reason they select Benson or Marody's RFA rights, that doesn't change much. But I figure they won't. Unless Benson or Marody want to sign in Seattle, it will just be a big mess and SEA won't gain any value

That works too. Seattle likely wouldn't bother taking Kahun unless he wants to sign with them(he likely wants to test free agency) so they're left with Turris, Russell, Neal, Kassian

Iafallo would cost around 4 mill to sign, think around Toffoli’s price last off season

Yea its possible. A 1 year show me deal on McD's wing will make him a lot more money in the future though. Similar to Barrie although Iaffolo is having a good season already. Could put up 60+ points with McD then get paid $5mill+ long term if they really click. The McDraisaitl discount

Edmonton has to get a guy that is cost controlled with at least 2 years. 2022-23 will be their hardest cap year.

    Kahun is an RFA.

Say Seattle selects his Kahun, giving them his RFA rights. If he doesn't want to sign with them or accept a qualifying offer, it turns into a big ordeal. He can just return to play in Germany if he holds out till January 1st. His RFA rights aren't worth anything because his market value is likely under $1.41mill, the minimum required for compensation. If Kahun doesn't want to play with Seattle, they receive 0 value from Edmonton. It's a gamble, but maybe they like that better than taking Turris, Neal, Russell or Kassian if we protect Archibald over Kahun. They likely just ask Kahun if he wants to sign with them and he says no so he can test free agency on his own. I chose to protect Kahun anyways just in case

I agree that the 2021-22 offseason/2022-23 season will be extremely difficult cap-wise. I don't see the solution being locking a guy up to a multi year deal to play with McD. A 1 year deal allows for more flexibility. If Nurse, Bear and Pulju start tearing it up, and earn big raises, we'll regret that multi year deal when we can't afford our own guys. The name of the game is 1 year deals right now, especially with so many key players needing extensions. I signed Danault/whoever our 3C will be to a 2Y deal because it leaves more than enough cap space for next season and fills a crucial role

If you can get somebody to play with Mcdavid for 3.5 Million for 2 Years you've got at least 1.5 million more to give Nurse and 2 million more to give Puljujarvi on their next contracts. If you sign a guy for 5 milllion you've got 2 million to sign both its going to be that tight and then the following year they have 4 million more that comes off dead cap.

You also have to consider the fact that Nurse could very well win a Norris between this year and next. Bear also needs a raise of likely $1-3mill. Pulju a raise of $2-4mill. Also consider the possibility that we might need to spend on a 1B if Merzlikins doesn't work out. Better safe than sorry imo but I see what you reasoning is, maybe it could work out
