Description
I'm becoming less and less enthused about paying Nuge big money for big term this summer. I like the player, but he hasn't been producing nearly enough to justify a big contract into his mid-30's IMO. So if he doesn't want to sign a deal I consider reasonable, I'd cut bait. Seriously.

I have two options for signing a LW to replace Nugent-Hopkins for $5-6M for 1 year:
Hall: give him a year to see if he can sort out his career or if all the injuries have had a long-term effect. Some of you are going to squawk about the AAV being too low, but honestly its fair considering his production this year and last.
Hoffman: a $1-2M raise based on a decent - but not amazing - season in St. Louis, this deal has potential to really pay off for the Oilers.

Adding size and physicality to the bottom-6 to make the Oilers harder to play against. There's some scoring ability there too.

Yamamoto: IMO he isn't as important to the team (especially at current production rates) as Bear was last summer - having played 1RD successfully in his rookie season, Klefbom going missing - and yet he only got $2M x 2 on his bridge deal. If that is who Holland uses as a comp, I don't see Yamamoto getting more than $1.75M on a 2-year deal and less than $3M on a 3 year deal.

By the same token, Kahun is on pace to score just 9-9-18 in 55 games (27 points per 82) while playing next to the reigning Hart trophy winner. You'd expect that from any decent AHLer - that's simply not worth more than $1M by any measure.

I'd be really surprised to see Armia sign that cheaply. He'd be a good fit on the Oilers though.

Holloway isn’t going to move right up to playing with mcdavid. He’s more of a grinder than a pure goalscorer like we need for mcdavid. Hall would be a good player to play beside Draisaitl. Somebody like Tomas Tatar would be good for Mcdavid. The problem is nuge should be playing with drai plain and simple. He needs to slow things down and be a playmaker rather than a shooter. If they found a winger for mcdavid nuge would be fine.

I dont think Hyman leaves the best team in the league, the team who gave him a chance to leave for the oilers.

Why would Hyman take one for the team with all those 10mill+ contracts in Toronto? He can get paid and he knows it. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make $4mill. Unless the Leafs make a big cut to the goaltending budget this summer there's literally no way they can afford him currently

I used to be all for signing Hoffman, but imo he's slow, and his biggest selling feature is his one timer. He's a lefty, we already have Drai for that option on the PP. As long as it's a 1 year deal it's not the end of the world. I don't think there's a perfect fit for our top 6 this summer in free agency. Janmark or Iaffolo would be interesting signings

the leafs are likely to let fred walk. Hyman has said he’s interested in taking a discount to play with the leafs. I’m pretty sure we stick with hyman and bring a cheaper goalie in and go 1a/1b with campbell

Yeah, Hall might be the better option of the two.

This kid just led the NCAA in P/GP as a teenager, I'm not sure why you'd say he's a grinder. And McDavid is 2nd in the league in goals this season, why does he need a sniper? He doesn't. He needs a power forward who can forecheck, win puck battles and go to the net and create chaos, ideally while also being defensively responsible. Holloway is all of those things.

Sure, I specifically made allowance for Hall in the Explanation. I'm not sold on Tatar personally, he's too small to be effective in the areas I identified. If he'd do 1-year x $5M I'd take a look though, he might work well in tandem with Puljujarvi.

Sure, but the basis for this post is that Nuge wants too much and I let him walk. If (say) Seattle is willing to pay him $8M, I'm not going to match that.

You might be right. He's the type I'd target though, there should be other guys available with similar skillsets this summer.

I'm not debating that Holloway could play with mcdavid but rather that he shouldn't just yet. You don't cut your teeth in the NHL playing beside Mcdavid against the leagues best defenders it would screw him right up.

All of the things you just described that mcdavid needs are already Puljujarvi. Mcdavid draws so much attention that other players can get away with walking to the net or have an extra second to shoot if you have somebody who can capitalize or even score from somewhere he shouldn't that would change things drastically.

Your first paragraph fundamentally disagrees with your second.
