Mark Stone and the 2019 Trade Deadline

Description
It's 2 hours to the deadline and Mark Stone is a pending UFA who refuses to resign with Ottawa.

You're unhappy with what other teams have offered you for Stone so far.

Some teams have lost interest already and are very busy talking to other teams about other priorities.

Vegas "comes to the rescue" as the hour grows late.

They basically offer you Brannstrom and a 2020 2nd for Stone.

They also have an extension ready to go for Stone in the event a trade takes place.

You feel the return for Stone is "light" and "anaemic".

What else do you ask for without being greedy and making Vegas lose interest?

Was Brannstrom and a 2020 2nd really the best Ottawa could have got for Stone?

Let me know what you think :)

Détails additionnels:
Maybe another 2nd round pick? I could maybe live without an additional 2nd if Vegas added Cody Glass in addition to what Ottawa actually got.

Had you traded him preseason, yes. But an hour to the deadline, you take what you can get. That’s on the GM for not acting when he should have.

The Flames deal fell apart because the Flames didn't want to give up Valimaki, I think looking bad on that it wasn't the worst decision but with how the right side of our forward group looks I would be very inclined to take a do over on that. I do think that getting a 9 million dollar extension for Stone would have been tough, we would still be strapped with either James Neal or a James Neal buyout, Andersson wouldn't have gotten the great deal he's on now, and Markstrom/Tanev likely wouldn't be a thing.

An unfortunate return for ottawa. Top 15 player in the league. I agree that if you traded him before the season they would have been able to get a way bigger return especially with an extension in place and there would have been more suitors. IMO they should have been able to get a teams top prospect

In my hypothetical scenario, Ottawa gets both Brannstrom and Glass.

Holy sh*t looking back on this makes me so mad. I know Winnipeg was in heavy on stone, but they didn’t want to give up Roslovic I think. What a joke, while we didn’t know at the time how stone wound end up, he was still very good in Ottawa. Why didn’t Chevy trade Roslovic and a 1st for stone?!?

Maybe because Chevy didn't want to be forced to give Stone an 8-year extension at 9.5 million per.

Which was what happened with Vegas.

Like most trades at the deadline, you can't truly evaluate it this early. It will be years before we see how it all shakes down. But yes, when Stone was acquired we were all in a little shock and waited anxiously to find out "what else did we give up?"

But I sure hope the praise Dorian gave Brannstrom that fateful afternoon comes through for you guys. Honestly, I just don't know how a 5'9" 180lb d-man makes an NHL career. How does he move the average forward out from in front of the net? When VGK drafted him we were all saying the same thing "geez, I hope he's still growing". All that said, I wish that kid nothing but success and I hope he can figure out a way to stick.

I mean to be fair I’d be paying him that much.. he’s a top 10 winger in the league. Best two way winger in the league too.
