If They Kept Kadri

Description
One thing I always wonder is why the Leafs didn't try Kadri at wing after signing Tavares.

If I recall correctly, in 2017/18, the Leafs played Marner down the middle and Kadri on the wing for 40 games. During that stretch Marner scored at a 90 point pace and Kadri scored at a 40 goal pace. If they put him on LW with Tavares and Marner in 2018/19, I think he would've hit career highs again rather than slumping as the 3C which he never seemed to fit.

If the Leafs kept Kadri, I feel they would've resigned Jake Gardiner because they still needed a top 4 defenceman as a result of not getting Barrie. Prioritizing those 2 guys would've left a lack of cap space to lock Marner long term, so he would've had to take a bridge deal worth 8-9 million.

That's true. I just think it would've been interesting to see what Gardiner could do away from Zaitsev.

He played several years without him on the Leafs. So picture that but a bit worse, and a bit slower.

Also, Gardiner can't play RD. Muzzin can't play RD, and Rielly isn't as effective at RD, so signing a $4m+ LD to play 3rd pair long term made little to no sense.

So not really much point in continuing to wonder - what if.

IDK man, the stats say Rielly and Gardiner played together for about 240 minutes and the results were fantastic. They controlled almost 60% of the shot attempts and chances.

When they were down in games, and the team was pressing for a goal.

Same as Dermott would replace Ceci on the top pair if Leafs were trailing in the 3rd.

If Rielly was just as good on RD do you really think they'd be trying so hard the last few years (it seems like 20) to find a capable RD?

I'm starting to understand why you can't let the Marner contract go.

You can't let anything go.

I believe it was Gardiner playing on the right side during those situations.

Rielly had a few auditions on his off-side over the years. Gardiner never played his off-side.

I know Rielly played the right side during a brief period with Muzzin but that’s about it.

Did you just start watching the Leafs in 2018?

No I’ve been closely following this team since the rebuild started. It’s just, every time I saw Gardiner playing with Rielly, I noticed him from the right side.

Rielly played RD with Hunwick, Marincin and Gardiner. Was strictly LD once he paired up with Zaitsev and then Hainsey and ever since.

Gardiner didnt play RD.

I had to reduce it to fit in both Kadri and Gardiner. It's a hindsight team, nothing serious.

Then don't sign Gardiner. It's simple.

you say prime as if he isn't still in his prime lol

crosby, malkin, kane, toews, getzlaf, marleau were/are all still basically excellent at 32-33.

tavares JUST turned 30, being one of the top 10 goal scorers of the last decade, I'd put him in the category of guys not likely to fall off a cliff, he's a fitness/hockey freak

I'd attribute his down year to being a new dad, a broken hand, and an oblique injury - not age imo

Yes I agree. The thing is, Tavares was averaging 35 goals and 78 points per 82 games during his time with NYI. I feel that is more impressive than Point because he was playing with guys like Okposo and Moulson whereas Point gets to play with Kucherov and Stamkos.

I asked this because I feel people have been writing off Tavares as a top player for some reason, very few people outside Toronto rate him.

Real hockey fans know the value of Tavares and what he brings to the table. There too many people (on here especially) that only look at points for stats. These are the same people saying Draisaitl is better than the likes of Crosby and Mackinnon. Drai is good. But he’s not quite a player who changes the game at both ends of the ice. Much like Point. He is great. And will likely be a top centre in most of his career. But let the kid grow before comparing him to some of these guys.
