Unless you're 100% sure about the guy, why sign him to such a big contract? IMO Phanuef is not a bad guy. But I really think he not a guy you wanted on your team. In Leaf Land...He was made Captain (unwarranted), got a big contract (unwarranted0. Again not Dion's fault but it made the players resent him. The perception that he was just a "spy" in the room for Burke and Wilson. And that money, good for him, but when the Leafs had cap problems due to stupid signings, his contract was a anchor on the team.
Phil Kessel defended Dion publicly but I think he was the only one. In my working life, (I'm basically retired now), I have told idiot, directors and a vice president also, ""Stay home, collect your money, cause your contribution at work is a negative, just stay away and the company will be more productive." (all said in private).) IMO this is what many players thought of Dion.
