Laine and Fox

Description
Per a recent Frank Seravalli tweet, NYR is in deep cap trouble with the bonus cushion limit. They need to shed players with performance bonuses. Would Fox be available? He's obviously a great dman and would be a good replacement if we trade Sanheim for Laine. His best quality though is that he is expansion draft exempt, so we can still go after a guy like Pietrangelo or Krug. Only question is what would it take to get him. I feel like NYR fans will say this isn't enough but I don't really know how to value him... input is welcome. The Laine trade, on the other hand, I feel is fair value and fits us with the cap.

Seattle Protection would look like:
Forwards - Giroux, Couturier, Hayes, Laine, Lindblom, Patrick, Konecny
Defensemen - Provorov, Krug, Myers
Goalie - Hart

Voracek, Smith, or NAK liklely selected

This is what I feared. But who are the Rangers going to trade in order to stay under the bonus cushion limit? The only other options are Kakko and Sheshterkin. Or are they going to shed cap another way (eg trade Smith)?

We trading smith soon. That’s what’s happening and letting Strome go to fa than trade for Danult or potentially Offer sheet cierelli but prob not

If we are trading Sanheim for Laine, I think I would be willing to form a package around Farabee for Fox. But the problem is that adds to NYR's bonus issue. I guess Fox just wouldn't work in a trade, but I seriously have no idea how NYR is gonna do the gymnastics to get cap compliant with the bonus issue on top of the buyout cap hits.

There are better ways then to part with Fox. Yes true the more players with bonuses that are in the lineup the lower the working cap for this year however. All those players are on ELCs and are under a million dollars. So the more roster spots filled with ELCs the less cap has to be spent on roster players. And vice versa, the less ELC players on the roster, the more cap available to go to FAs and therefore more working cap. Rangers will likely decide on keeping one of ADA or Strome (seems like ADA form initial reports) and move Smith if they have to. Not only are they not moving Fox for that purpose, they are not trading him for that. Seravellis tweet is a little misleading...

I don't know if that will be enough to get you compliant. In fairness, I havent played around with NYR armchair yet. But I most definetely can't see you getting cirelli or danault. Did you see what Seravalli posted today? It seems like a huge issue. Or am I missing something?

OK that makes more sense. Admittedly, I think I saw the tweet from Frank and jumped the gun on Fox.

Your missing in that you seem to think the bonus limit is a hard line, where if they are over the ~6m in bonuses that make up 7.5% of the cap, they have to shed players that have bonuses to get compliant. Thats not it. They just lose dollars in real cap space for those additional bonus dollars. So the Rangers show 23m in cap space with CF right now but are really closer to 18m when you factor in Laffy. They arent just gonna give away Fox for some space lol. Easier ways to clear money.

Yeah I was confused on how the bonus cushion works. I see now that its more of like a tax than a limit. Thanks for explaining guys.

I highly doubt Winnipeg takes back JVR as a cap dump without compensation.
