I think Bergevin's plan would be to play out the year, Laine becomes an RFA, and we cross that bridge at a later date. That also makes for a massively motivated Laine, which is exactly what you would want.

Irregardless though, at that point both sides would be in a better position to know if you're the right fit for each other. Bergevin likely wants to date a little bit before deciding to get married. And in the event that it doesn't work out, Laine still has trade value as an RFA.

I highly doubt that Danault gets moved though. Julien and Danault are too good a fit. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs after the expansion draft for 6 years at somewhere between $4.75mm-$5.5mm. There are so many other pieces we have that could be of interest to Winnipeg though.

I think he might get 6x$6mm somewhere in a normal market. Not sure about now. The economy isn't good. Especially not without the certainty of having many fans in seats.
It happens time and time again that players, agents, and media alike overvalue the UFA market. Both Pat Hickey and Gord Miller said basically 48 hours ago that they thought Edmundson would sign for a $5.5mm-$6mm cap hit.
Would Danault really leave for 6x$6mm from a team like Columbus (or rather the HOPE of MAYBE that being out there next offseason) compared to the certainty of 6x$4.75mm from the Habs playing 18 minutes a game? Maybe. I doubt it though.
