What a playoff run this was, but while gaining prime experience it exposed Vancouver’s deficiencies. Among the goals this summer is to improve the speed and puck movement from the back end. Add depth scoring to the forward group. Also this team needs to dump salary and pay for the sins of previous July 1st
Trade 1: Boeser is tough to trade and I think he will do real well with NJ. But Vancouver has to shed cap and improve the backend. I think it’s a deal that works well for both sides.
Trade 2: Buffalo is flush on RHD and weak on the right side. Virtanen for Montour is a popular trade on this website. I think it’s fair.. Buffalo also lacks center depth and could use someone like Beagle in their 4th line. In order to take his cap they get a 3rd round pick and a top 5 prospect in Vancouver’s system.
Trade 3: I’ve got to think Carolina will be looking to shed salary. Two under performing players who could use a fresh change of scenery are Nino and Dzingel. I think both would fit into Vancouver’s top 9. Esepecially Nino who has a previous connection with Green in the WHL. Roussel is still a serviceable
player but doesn’t really have a role with Vancouver anymore. Carolina has to take him on to make the cap work but in doing so they get a 1st round pick back.
Trade 4: Benn is a veteran dman who can fill a role as a 6/7 dman. At 2 million and only one year left it isn’t much to take on. But still in order for LA to take him on they get a 4th round pick to take the dump.
I think these trades and signing accomplish everything Vancouver should be looking at going forward. In net Demko proved in playoffs he could be the answer going forward. But there are still going to be bumps in the road and a learning curve which may take some time. Therefore if they move on from Markstrom they need a 1b goalie who can play and help the team win if Demko struggles being the guy.
The defence is vastly improved imo. Too many times you would see Vancouver just flip pucks out instead of skating and making a play and hitting the forwards in stride. I think Severson would be a perfect partner for Hughes. Montour is a mobile skilled dman that would be well paired with Edler who is slowing down a bit. I’m not a huge fan of Myers.. especially his contract but on the 3rd pair and less minutes I think he is effective. Having a vet to play with Juolevi would be crucial in his transition to the NHL.
Up front the depth is vastly improved also. I’m hoping Gaudette can make strides and bring scoring to the 3rd line.. but with Dzingel and Granlund are both capable of playing center so gives green options.
One of the biggest goals of the summer in clearing cap for resigning Petey, Hughes and Demko is accomplished because it gives Vancouver over 35 million in cap space next summer with (Granlund, Pearson, Dzingel, Leivo, Sutter, Edler, Greiss, Baertschi) coming off the cap.
It also sets of Vancouver for Seattle expansion. They go 7/3/1
Pettersson, Horvat, Miller, Nino, Gaudette, MacEwan, Motte
Severson, Montour, Juolevi
Demko
New Jersey Declines. Buffalo accepts. Carolina declines. Kings depend on prospects. Loui Eriksson's contract is horrible. Buffalo needs someone like virtanen. Carolina could accept but I don't know whyn they would. Kings don't pay a lot for Vancouver trying to ditch Benn
To expect Benn and Beagle having poorer teams on their
"modified "trade list" is doubtful. Gotta think they stay Canucks.
Benn has no trade protection so that is not an issue. In 20/21 Beagles modified no trade clause moves to 5 team no trade list. Sooo tough to say what 5 teams he would pick..
