When i said this was a test, i was trying to test how crazy Montreal fans are. Did you pass the test?

Let's do a comparison:

Tatar: Age 29 - 60 overall 2009
Smith: Age 29 - 69 overall 2009

Tatar Career: 575games 166g 181a 347p
Smith Career: 577games 144g 210a 354p

Tatar Past 3yrs: 67g 86a 153p (230 games)
Smith Past 3yrs: 68g 99a 167p (212 games)

Tatar in playoffs: 35games 6g 5a 11p
Smith in playoffs: 56games 18g 34a 52p

Tatar: 1yr left @ 4.8 mil
Smith: 2yr left @ 5.0 mil

Montreal Fans: Tatar is worth a 1st, a 2nd and a solid prospect

Also Montreal fans: Smith is NOT worth a first, HARD PASS!!!!!!!!

The scariest thing about crazy people, is that they don't know they're crazy

On a side note, does anyone else think these 2 were twins separated at birth?
I mean, can anyone find me two players who (outside of their playoffs) had such similarities in their careers?

Domi and Mantha have had similar stats and advanced stats. Both have been in the league 5 years and both are 25 yo. Detroit fans would have you believe that Mantha is worth a 1st + Suzuki or Kotkaniemi + Romanov and Domi isn't even worth a 2nd so yeah every fan base has players they believe are more valuable than a player with similar production from another team.

For a team ready to win Tatar and Smith are both worth that, Montreal is not ready to win, hence why he is not worth a 1st for us

Reilly Smith might be worth a 1st but Habs are not interested. Only way the 16th overall gets moved is in a deal for a younger player.

I'll take a look at Domi/Mantha

But I can imagine they are as similiar,

everything from Draft Position, Career games, Career Points, and Salary is just kinda remarkably right in line for Tatar / Smith

Reason I said no though is more that I don't feel like Smith would fit well in our system but I didn't think Tatar would either lol

I agree that they should be worth the same. They're clearly extremely similar players, Montreal just shouldn't be giving away their picks based on the direction their franchise is going. We are in the middle of a rebuild. We also already have Tatar who is capable of the exact same thing.

Last time I checked we were rebuilding. Now I may be wrong but I don't think rebuilding teams move 1st round picks in exchange for their immediate needs. We're going to get better using our prospect pool and building on it, not trading it away. Riley Smith may be exactly what the 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens need but if you're thinking long-term (like when we will begin to get good) this trade wont help us.
