Heavily slanted in Toronto's favour.

NJ would say no. Ceci is UFA, so holds no value in a trade and Der-A is not worth a first.

Ekblad is younger and is under contract for longer, so I don't see Florida considering it.

This must be a joke. How does Toronto get the best player, youngest player and only first round pick while only giving up Reilly

No no, as a Leaf fan I dig this trade, but I would want at least another first round pick, a share of the concessions and a share of jersey sales. Then we're talking.

So the Leafs give up their:

26 yr old No. 1 defenseman (who put up 72 Points las year)
A decent prospect in SDA
A depth D-man

FOR

A 24 yr old D-man (who only cracked 40 points for the first time ever last yr)
A 1st in 2020 (which they don't own so let's say 2021... which is conditional if they are in the top 3 they lose to the Devils in the Hall trade)
And a few magic beans? both are after the 4th round

Nah my man I don't see this being realistic, first look, sure it looks reasonable, once you look into the characteristics of it, it quickly becomes just not plausible and an unreasonable deal for the Leafs.

You might be the biggest homer on this site now if you think the Leafs are getting ripped offtears of joy

Re-read my comment show me where it says the Leafs are getting ripped off?? I don't think they'd be getting ripped off that's not the unrealistic part about it, if you cant see why this trade seriously wouldn't work for the Leafs then you might be the homer in this equation tears of joy tears of joy

That's all you had to say? do you really think trying to call someone a homer is going to be productive to some intuitive discussion lol?

Now if you want to debate trade talk and try and change each other minds, I'm game for that. Regarding your comment, there is a difference between Winning/Losing a trade and a trade making sense. To give you an example, I'm an NHL team and I have three elite 100 pt/Season Centres making $10 Mill on my team, now if I go and make a trade for a 3rd round pick for another centre that scores 100 points/Season at $10 Mill but will only play 5 mins/game on my 4th line and that year and only puts up 25 points does that make sense? No not at all it's counterproductive to my cap, team, and draft picks, but did I win the trade? Sure... I just acquired a 100pt/Season guy for only a 3rd rounder that's a steal. Even though it's a dramatization do you see the concept I'm getting at?

Now to apply it to this trade, the Leafs are looking for two things in a Dman, Solid Defense and Secondary Scoring (at the very least Solid Defense). They need someone to help add to the core they have already, they have the forward core to compete, now they need the defence to back it up, guys like Sandin, Liljegren, Lindgren, Hollwell and even Rosen are a ways away from competing consistently in the NHL, Dermott? he's quality but not a Top 2 defenseman yet. If you look at Cup-winning teams they have two Top 2 Defensemen (think of Chicago with Seabrook and Keith), now for the leafs to get to that position we need two of the those type of guys, this trade here we give up one for one ... it's a lateral trade with a nice bonus for the future ... but we need that Top 2 Defenseman now while we have this incredible team. So if this trade was to go through then the Leafs would lose the overall trade, they'd win on content but it wouldn't be what they needed as they already have a Top 2 guy, we need another one to be able to get in a solid cup run.

Which is why you'll see NHL commentators says, "we won't know who won this trade for a few years" most of the time because at face value it's easy to call but the overall aspect of things is where the team really wins or loses. Small edit, the point of view that Ekblad is by default the better player is openly debatable, while he's 2 years younger, Reilly has better offensive production and is a Top 2 defenseman, comparable even to Ekblad in that regard, so I wouldn't say he's 'better', ntm that 2020 1st round pick of Arizona's they don't have it, and their 2021 is conditional so if it were to resort to 2022 by then with the team ARZ has could be a 25th overall pick and not worth nearly as much as a Top 10 pick.
