Description
Sabres fans, what is your obsession with trading the 8OA, especially in deals under value. Familiarize yourself with the draft class this year, especially top 10. This isnt a year to trade a pick unless theres an offer than you cant refuse. We are practically guarenteed one of Holtz, perfetti, raymond, rossi who all are well worth an 8 OA pick. And who knows if any one slides. Trading the pick just to get a center until Cozens is ready is not the move using our pick. There are other ways to make this happen. You people need to read up on the draft this year before just throwing the pick out

They'd be foolish to not consider it, IMO. You are WAY overvaluing the draft pick and WAY overestimating the Sabres ability to get that pick right.

Between 2001 and 2015 there were 39 forwards taken with picks 4-7. If we rearrange them by P/GP performance we can see the odds of getting a difference-maker:

Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/39 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 8/39 = 20.5%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 17/39 = 43.6%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/39 = 35.9%

I did that research when Buffalo was slotted to get the 7th pick, but since they're now picking 8th lets repeat the procedure but with picks 8-10. Forwards only, from 2001 to 2015 inclusive:

Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/27 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 2/27 = 7.4%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 11/27 = 40.7%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/27 = 51.9%

High picks are great, but (cap aside) if you have a chance to trade your #8 pick for an established player in his early 20's who scores 0.67 P/GP you shouldn't dismiss that as "foolish". Only 2 of the players in the Top-6 range matched or exceeded 0.67 P/GP, meaning that you typically have a 14.8% chance of getting a player equal to or better (offensively) than Domi with that pick. AGAIN, it depends on who is available there, but to dismiss the notion of trading the pick so hastily is foolish.

This is why I laugh when Sabres fans balk if someone proposes Gaudreau for the 8th overall ++. That'd be such a home run for Buffalo it's not even funny. A career 0.99 point per game winger while playing with Monahan, who is a solid center in his own right but he's no Eichel. And having EIchel would make extending Johnny way more likely too.
Nice work on the research BTW.

You guys might like the odds I posted above.

The Sabres are just so bad at drafting that they would manage to find the only bust in the top 10 of this class. This fan base (and frankly Eichel) are sick of waiting for these "star" players to develop. From a fan that has suffered through Girgensens, Grigorenko, Ristolainen, Reinhart not coming even close to living up to a #2 pick (albeit solid), Nylander, Mittelstadt... they need a new approach and I completely disagree with guys like Holtz, Raymond, Perfetti being NHL ready. This past season, two of them were barely SHL ready. They need to surround Cozens and Mitts with established players for them to reach their ceiling

This is false. Please read up more on prospects this year. This isnt a normal year. There are 4-6 guys that are being labeled as making the NHL this year and making an impact. Trading the pick just because you are impatient is the exact same reason we got screwed with ROR. Wake up

They say that every year, how your "NHL ready guys" like Hughes, Kakko, Dach, Kotkaniemi, Hayton, etc doing. It can go on forever

Drafting at 8 will make sure Eichel asks out in a year.

Either you didn't read what I wrote or your comprehension failed you badly.

Actually i totally get what youre saying. I think the lack of comprehension is on your end. Let me use smaller words to help.

NEW PLAYERS EVERY YEAR.

Looking at pasts drafts and who panned out is fun and all for you maybe but it doesnt show how this class will work out

Sabres can't wait on an 18 year old to help Eichel.

like Mittlestadt, believe me, you dont want to listen to TBL fans crying while the realize when arguing with you how bad their cap situation really is. In reality it is a possiblity, though Cirelli heavy PDO worries me, in context
