Shattenkirk for Nash is possible with retained salary

Description
Retaining 3.5M on Nash's contract might get the deal done. It might hurt next off season resigning needed pieces but would vastly improve the defensive needs the Rangers have. Glass' 1.45m comes off the books next year, giving the expansion team a 2nd round pick to take Girardi during the expansion draft to open up more cap space and protect other assets which are more valuable that aren't able to be 'officially protected'. 15-20M in free cap space next off season should be more than enough to resign wanted UFAs and RFAs.

*** *Edit* Even if Girardi's NMC doesn't kick in till after the expansion draft, buy him out during the buyout period next off season. I would still consider giving up one of the 2018 2nd round picks to have the expansion team pick a player of the Rangers choosing rather than lose a solid player they weren't able to protect. ***

No way is Gorton retaining close to 1/2 of Nashes salary not even for Shattenkirk. St Louis can do much better for Shatty then an aging overpaid Rick Nash.

Shattenkirk's trade value is deminishing as the regular season approaches and will drop off even further as it gets closer to the trade deadline. While it may be expensive on NYR's side to acquire him for the upcoming season it would be worth it to retool the blue line with Shatty

I thought Girardi's NMC turned into a NTC on June 1, 2017. Even so, I believe there is another buyout period coming up before the season starts which would provide slight cap relief if bought out. The better move would be to wait to buy him out just prior to the expansion draft (I believe the buyout window starts the 15th) just to be able to protect another asset; not to mention way cheaper to wait till the end of the 16/17 season. Still enough $$ left on the books to pull in Shatty for the whole regular season.

That buyout period is now and only if you have an RFA go to arbitration, which we didn't.
