Description

-DET, SJS (OTT), and LAK win lottery
-VAN loses qualifier to MIN and sends their unprotected 2021 first to the Devils for the VAN 2020 first (13).
-ARI wins qualifier to NSH
-NYR wins qualifier to CAR so Devils don't receive conditional third for Sami Vatanen.
-ARI wins first round to COL so the ARI conditional 2021 third is upgraded to a second.
-ARI wins second round to VGK
-ARI loses Western Conference Final to STL, settling on pick 27 to the Devils in 2020.
-TB wins against STL in the Stanley Cup Final
-VAN send back their 2020 first (13) to the Devils before the draft to take on the Loui Eriksson and Sven Baertschi contracts.
-ARI send a fourth and fifth to the Devils before the draft to take on Alex Goligoski.
-ARI uses cap savings to re-sign Taylor Hall to 8 year 9 mil contract, upgrading their 2021 second to an unprotected first.

I'm interested in that VAN cap situation. As a Devil fan, I would love to make that deal, I feel like DET does it for slightly cheaper or gives up a bit to get that 1st round pick.

Whether VAN gives up the 1st in 2020 or 2021, it doesn't matter.

Goligoski has more value than it would be seen as a toxic deal from ARI. Some team would pay for him. Likely would have to take on Grabner as a toxic deal to bring the cost down to something ARI is giving away.

Why buyout Baertschi? He has only one year left on his contract and he's still talented enough to help us. Keep him and maybe flip him at the deadline.

If I'm the Vancouver GM and we just lost the qualifying round and had to lose our 21 unprotected first, I would probably make whatever deal necessary to re-sign Markstrom to avoid an unlucky or disastrous year. Even a young talented team like theirs could collapse if Demko doesn't succeed right away. The Devils just saw their season go down the tubes in a month with shoddy goaltending.

I like the idea of having a veteran LHD on a short term deal to pair with Severson on the first pair, maybe bringing back Andy Greene. That is why I took a shot at Goligoski. If the Devils are willing to move on from Will Butcher for decent value (late second) they could fit in a return with Grabner. (He may not want to waive his NTC to come, but generally they waive it these days.)

I totally agree VAN would rather give up the pick this year than next, I meant to phrase that toward a Ericksson trade if he came to NJD.

I would like a Goligoski, I'm saying we wouldn't get a 4th and 5th with him for a 7th. More likely it would cost a 3rd to take him on as he can EASILY be flipped at the deadline for more if Devils are out of it.

The problem with your Eriksson/VAN scenario is that he has a NTC; if he isn't assured even a bottom 6 spot with the Devils he likely won't waive.
