I rather sign our guys long term on team friendly contracts that sign everyone to one year deals. Pretty much makes us worse next season but better the 2 seasons after that. Hopefully our guys can get their trade value back up without injuries.

Short term thinking almost never pays off unless you get a Kawhi.

Rittich is barely an NHL calibre starter. Roll with Andersen and Campbell, give Freddie less starts and see how things progress. Maybe Campbell shows he can be a starter and Will takes strides. Maybe something else comes up. To just throw in the towel because Andersen may cost too much is short term thinking and it's a panic move. This team is in its window of contention, no point in wasting years by purposely making yourself worse just because the year after may require you to rethink your goaltending.

Dubas will probs keep freddie and see how the cap works out in 2021. It may go to 83.5 it may stay at 81.5 or go up by a large margin due to seattle 86mill. We will just have to wait and see.

It likely stays at 81.5M or goes down... Especially if next season gets short by this season's playoffs. Probably stays pretty close to 81.5M for the next 2-3 seasons.

On top of what you have stated, the 2020 - 2021 free agency will be dedicated towards a lot of starting goaltenders. If the Leafs want a cheaper, but potentially a better net minder, they should wait until the end of next season.

Not a panic move at all. Look what happened when we traded 3 years of Kadri for 1 year of Barrie.

Look at Arizona trading for Hall.

Arizona is a completely different story. They were a bubble team that wanted to finally get over the hump and who knows if they would have made it. TO is a playoff team and your idea limits or possibly even prevents them from contending.

The Kadri trade didn't pan out as well as we had hoped but to suggest that if we didn't make the trade that we'd be better off is silly.

1) Kadri wore out his welcome. Two years in a row he was suspended in the playoffs because he can't keep his cool.

2) Kerfoot never settled into the 3C role, but also was bounced all over the lineup and never really had an extended period of time with the same linemates, it's too early to judge him.

3) Image the Leafs Blueline without Barrie when Muzzin, Rielly and Ceci were all hurt. You would have had Dermott and Holl as your top pair with Marincin and Sandin the 2nd pair and Liljegren and Rosen as the 3rd pair. That is pretty much the AHL Blueline when they won the calder. Barrie wasn't a star in TO but he did a decent job when Keefe took over.

Now I imagine you think the Leafs should have traded, Bozak, JVR and Gardiner when they were in their FA years instead of losing them for nothing and I agree with that. That was a different time though, they were not contenders yet. They are now and burning a year is folly. Andersen is their best option in net for next season. Unless something crazy comes up, you ride with him and see what happens. The last thing you want is for this team to be terrific but with suspect goal tending. That can sap the confidence of the team and send you off a cliff real fast.

Rittich is not nearly as good as Andersen, this isn't a wise plan.

We could have gotten DeMelo for a 3rd round pick instead of packaging it in the Barrie trade.

I'd argue that the Leafs had a better roster last year than they will have next year. Although I would have traded Gardiner anyway. Never let a player walk away for nothing.

And DeMelo is a huge difference maker? Not at all. He's a depth guy, he doesn't move the needle. I think you let players walk when you are at certain stages of your window. If you legitimately think you can go on a run, you never weaken your team and TO legitimately can make a run. Especially if you just ignore the media and Babcock rhetoric that you need 3 LHD and 3 RHD to be good. You don't, you need 6 NHL calibre defenceman. I think TO's defence is going to be good next year. Very mobile and fast. What hand they shoot isn't very important. Do you honestly think that having 6 lefties who are all extremely good is a problem? Especially if many of them are comfortable playing on their weakside? Remember when the Leads top pair was Kaberle and McCabe? Both lefties. Did it make one of them terrible? No.

Rielly is an all star and a stud. Muzzin is a top pair defender and a shut down specialist. Holl was really solid last year and proved he's a top 4 guy. Lehtonen was just named the best defenceman in the KHL. He should be capable. Dermott is going to improve as will Sandin and Liljegren. Marincin is fine if he's your #7 he's actually really useful in that role. Rosen can play in case if injuries. The Leafs are fine.

I'd take Kadri over Kerfoot any day of the week.

I probably would too but I also understand why the trade was made. Kadri was too wild and he was redundant in TO. Kerfoot could still find a groove and succeed in TO but Kadri getting suspended twice cost us way too much.
