I can see Fast getting more $ in FA if he doesn't resign with NYR. If that's the case, I'm comfortable promoting Simon to 1st line RW to fill that void and using someone in our org to fill 3rd line LW. (Marleau, O'Connor) or sign a depth FA F like Leivo/Janmark/Nieto
I doubt MIN offers Soucy 4x what he's making right now, but I can see him blossoming into a phenomenal shutdown D for us learning alongside Hainsey and Gonchar.
As for Hainsey - he takes a bit of a discount to come back to PIT to chase another cup before retirement. Again, if he gets more $ elsewhere and doesn't sign with us, I'm comfortable playing either Riikola/Ruhwedel if necessary or signing another depth D like TVR/Bogosian/Daley/Rutta
I think both trades are fair value and UFA/RFA signings are fair. If this exact team gets assembled in real life (obviously it wouldn't) I think they'd be a heavy heavy SC favourite.
Toronto traded Zaitsev to you guys with Brown as the only sweetener and they got Ceci (who is not that much worse than Zaitsev) and a 3rd back!! Zaitsev is owed 4.5M UNTIL 2024! and you're sitting here saying JJ costs a 1st to move
Connor Brown would have been a top 6 forward on the pens this year. Attach a top 6 forward with team control to Johnson and maybe we'll give you a 3rd+Reilly. If you really want to compare values.

Wow, that ain't it chief!
Once again, gonna reiterate the fact that thank god you are not a GM!

So where is the Connor Brown type sweetner in this deal?
JJ contract >>>>> Zaitsev. Don't need a Connor Brown type sweetener.
JJ is almost 10M cheaper than Zaitsev, you think the sweetener should be the same? Oof
Zaitsev has his issues but the pros outweigh the cons in this instance. He can still keep up in today's NHL unlike JJ. You're arrogance is the bigger issue though.
End of story on this one I'm afraid. JJ won't be moved without significantly more attached. Ottawa has no use for him unless Pittsburgh makes it worth the cost.

End of story, JJ won't need "significantly" more attached for him to move. End of story my dude!
The facts? As I said. Connor Brown would be the 6th forward on your team in points (even with minimal talent around him), and is extremely responsible defensively and always shows up. All I'm proving is that Connor Brown has a lot more value than you're suggesting. And Zaitsev is genuinely better than Johnson and that's saying something.
