I think that Montour is overrated for sure. Especially by Sabres fans. Mittelstadt certainly isn't living up to his draft position but, he is only 21 years old so... there's that to consider too.

That being said, does this really make the Leafs a better team? To be perfectly honest... I'm not sure it does. Montour is definitely not a top pairing RHD and Mittelstadt is a young, fringe NHL'er at present.

Buffalo probably declines and I'm glad that they probably would.

The Edmonton trade is fine if only for salary cap reasons. Nothing about JP has impressed me since he played in junior with Aho and Laine. Nothing.

Montour > Dermott offensively. Dermott > Montour defensively. Also Dermott is younger and cheaper.

As much as I love Rielly, he needs a steady partner to be most effective (think Hainsey not ancient and able to make a pass). Rielly - Montour pairing would terrifying to watch against other teams best.

That team would take a pretty big step back in the short term.
