My first reaction to the DET/VAN trade was "DET is getting nothing for taking the contract dump". But, the light clicked, DET may need the cap usage. If Yzerman decides to make the team very young (and it's naturally going to get younger because they aren't going to resign their UFAs), even with Mantha and Bertuzzi extensions they could be flirting with the cap floor. They may want a $2-3mm contract to bring them above the floor. So, getting to the floor for a 4th round pick is worth it (if I remember correctly, Goldobin is already going to the KHL, so that really isn't anything, though maybe DET takes a crack at getting him to try for a spot in DET).
