Sabres- In Season Blockbuster

Description
Both teams move pieces back and forth to make their roster better and hopefully fuel a playoff run. Buffalo's big target in this scenario is Jimmy Howard after Lehner struggles and Detroits target is Zach Bogosian once they realize they need a RHD who has potential to play top minutes and add grit to the backend. Buffalo gets a older veteran starting goalie to hold it down until Ullmark and Peterson are ready. They also get a PPQB dman in Green who is also on the older side but has loads of experience and adds scoring to the backend while also getting a prospect who is ready to start his NHL career. Detroit gets a top RHD who has top-pairing potential but at worst is a good 2nd pairing guy; he brings grit and scoring to the backend nicely. Detroit gets depth at center in Larsson who is a solid bottom-6 guy and also a cheap backup goalie to Mrazek to finally give Mrazek the net. They also get a draft pick. Detroit is happy in this trade to save around 3 mill in the cap

Legwand was signed as depth in the offseason for veteran presence in ROCH and he gets brought up to take the spot vacated by Larsson

Howard has much worse numbers then Lehner so unless he is hurt again this year I don’t see us being this desperate. .906, .910, and .910 SVS% over the last 3 years doesn’t add up a starting goalie, it barely adds up to a backup goalie. Howard is tied for 38th in SVS%, is 39th GAA with 2.8 last season and his Shootout Save % is .556 good for 50th in the league last year. How is anyone calling him a starting goalie and targeting him for a trade to take on his bloated contract that has 3 years left even with the retained salary…..

Personally I don't think at this time the trade makes sense for either team.

I agree. Lehner is solid, but inconsistent. He has played behind a team that gives up way too many quality scoring chances (a little too wide open). Howard has been behind a team more disciplined but put up some bad numbers. Focus for the Sabres should be to shore up the defensive zone more and if Lehner continues to struggle, trade for a franchise guy, like BOBROVSKY. Maybe send Eichel & a 1st round pick (you know, Bobs don't grow on trees), so ya got to spend a little.
Ok, maybe that's a little high, Ristolainen & O'Reilly?

Your smoking crack if you think the Sabres would trade Eichel for anything short of, I guess, McDavid which would never happen anyway. Eichel is a franchise type player. Ristolainen wouldn’t happen either being our #1 D. O’Reilly would really be hard at this point as well. I guess this also is because I’m of the believe in the Salary Cap era is that you don’t need a franchise goalie and don’t want to be spending 7.5mil on a goalie. This is especially true when you look at say Pittsburgh, who played almost all the post season that’s right the 628,333 a year Matt Murray. Ohh lets look at Tampa and there hero Vasilevskiy who was making what just over 900K. Or you can look at where goaltending went horribly wrong with the Stars spending over 10mil on two goaltenders that were good and then they both sucked. Even better then that what happens when you have the best goalie in the sport with nothing around him and say he gets hurt a month into the season, lets ask the Canadiens. I would bet they would trade for a middle of the pack goalie if they had some young talent up front and on D. I can live with an average goalie at 3-4mil a year and have the team around him with higher priced scoring and D talent rather then place all my eggs in one basket. It just seems like a better use of CAP space to me.

If Bobrovsky was as good as all CLB fans say he is, he wouldn't be included in every cap dump trade they mention. He's not bad by any means, he didn't win a Vezina for nothing and that is noted but he is severely overrated and overpaid. Mentioning Bobrovsky in the same breath as guys like Eichel and Ristolainen is comical. O'Reilly for Bob at least can work for both teams. Whether you agree with it or not.
