I am a big fan of Nathan MacKinnon and think he'll be one of the contenders for the Hart this season. However, Jack Eichel has been straight up dominant as well. I saw a debate about these two players on YouTube, so I thought it'd be interesting to hear from you guys. Who is better?
MacKinnon has 482 points in 514 games for a point per game average of .94. Eichel has 307 points in 320 games for a point per game average of .95.
We need to keep in mind that Eichel has played mainly with Oloffson, Skinner and Reinhart, whereas MacKinnon plays with Rantanen and Landeskog. So, who is better?
Both are probably top 5 centers in the league (certainly top 10) but MacKinnon has the edge
Bet you said the same thing about Mac 2 years ago in his breakout season. Other young players are allowed to have those as well, and if youve even watched a Sabres game at all Eichel has been the best player on the ice 95% of games this year
No doubt Jack has been phenomenal this season. Although, I think Malkin was better than him at this age.
both are really great players but you gotta give the edge to MacK. If you are taking into effect the $$ of their contracts as well, MacK wins by a landslide.
MacKinnon is going to get paid on his next deal. Maybe 14-15 million?
Literally no one in their sane mind has called him a bust. Unless ur McDavid/Crosby you basically cant do anything as a center with no talented wingers. you really have not been paying attention to Eichel if you think he was a bust. He finally has talented wingers and is showing what he can do and why he deserved to go second overall. Hes not better than MacK/Crosby/McDavid but at this very moment including injuries he is a top 5 center in the league hands down.
Yes but people often don’t regard Malkin as an elite player.
Malkin will most likely make the HoF but he has taken a step back from his prime (regardless of his performance right now, its not as good as it was). Anyways the question had nothing to do with Malkin in he first place, there is no point in bringing him up now
What are you talking about? Eichel has been a dominate player for 4 years now. Look at his ppg since year 2!
That is why Sabres have been in the playoffs. Average at best. I don’t care if a player gets close to a point a game. It is pointless if you don’t win hockey games. I will repeat it. Eichel is now playing up his draft hype.

I feel that's a poor way to judge a player. One player can only affect the game so much vs say basketball

Jack’s 2-way game has gone to a whole new level this season and his growth as the franchise player has undoubtedly helped the Sabres to be playoff contenders. He has a better team around him, although they still have Sheary who might be the worst player ever. However, Eichel has definitely been one of the game’s elite offensive players over the past few seasons.

And that is what I have been saying. He is now playing up to being selected 2nd overall. I love nothing more than for him to continue playing at this level and being consider a candidate for the Hart. It would be good for the game.
