At this point with the Oilers falling down the standings and massive holes in their depth, don't you think it would make more sense to sell off some assets and hope to come back with a younger, faster and better depth on the team next season? Edmonton isn't a good team. They have the best line in hockey and nothing else. They are getting caved in at 5v5, Smith is terrible and the only reason they are in a playoff spots is because for the first quarter of the season, they had 2 goalies playing way better than they can. Now as they are falling back to earth, they are on the verge of falling out of the playoffs entirely. Slapping a bandaid on this squad at the expense of the future seems about as dumb as anything Chiarelli has ever done.

yknow what might help the oilers stop being a one line team that cant score at 5v5? taylor hall (and getting rid of russell). instead of missing the playoffs again, having attendance dip again and having everyone misrable, try and finally add a piece thats been missing forever.

Not much "future" has been given up here though.

- Lagesson is a good defender but doesn't have a lot of offensive upside and plays a position that is saturated in Edmonton
- Puljujarvi has seemingly made up his mind never to play for Edmonton again, so he's an asset for trade only and provides zero future value to the roster
- Russell isn't as terrible as most people here think, but his loss wouldn't be a huge one as he's 3rd on the LHD depth chart and he's not going to be on this team beyond his current contract
- the 2021 2nd is unlikely to make any sort of impact on an NHL roster for at least 5 years, and if the condition vests and the pick becomes a 1st then it will all have been worth it, no?
oilnate a aimé ceci.

The cost to obtain him is going to be higher than I think the Oilers can afford and it still may not be enough. Especially if Hall is going to test the market in the summer. You'd be selling off important future assets for a 1 shot at making the playoffs when there is so much wrong with this team that still won't be addressed. They aren't good defensively despite what people think, they only looked good for a while when your goalies were playing way above their ability. Now that they are falling back to earth, the lack of depth, and issues on defence and elsewhere are really becoming evident. You need to regroup more, otherwise this is exactly what will happen until McDavid wants out. Moments of hope that come crashing down because you can't succeed when you patch 10 million dollar holes with 10 dollar bandaids.

I agree. It all depends on how highly Shero values Puljujarvi, of course. And I don't think it was coincidence that NJ scouts came to Edmonton and Jones was recalled for that game... I think Caleb Jones is more likely to be included in this deal than William Lagesson.

Why? The team doesn't look remotely close to a contender. And adding another 10+ million dollar contract for a guy who'll be 29 when he starts it will make it almost impossible for you to fix the other holes you have all over the lineup.

So even if he did resign, its only going to create even more cap issues than you already have.

You hope not, is what you should be saying. He's a former MVP, why would he give you a discount of a couple of millions? Someone is going to offer him 10.5 million a year for 7 years, without a doubt. Ferris is his agent after all and he's going to get paid big.

This is a bigger pipe dream than some Leaf fans thinking Pietrangelo is going to sign for 5 years at 8.5 million in the off season. Its not going to happen.

I just read this, and realised where the trade idea came from:

https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/taylor-hall-trade-sage-becoming-a-fiasco-which-should-drive-down-his-price-in-trade

But I think I was right to suggest Jones over Lagesson, as it seems the NJD scouts came specifically to watch him play.
