I think a Price to NJ deal makes some sense, assuming he waives, etc etc but this return is not what the team would/should be looking for. Habs are not in need of another LW despite it being a good one. Now lose Price and replace him with whoever and the team is supposed to not let in more goals?
We'd still lose last nights game by 7 goals, the only difference is it would have been 10-3 instead. Yay... they scored a couple more goals in a still pointless route.
Taking on Schneider for Price would probably be the hard part to swallow for the trade to work but in doing so they'd have to pay a higher premium. If the Habs are losing Price and taking on Schnieder, this straight up means they are trying to retool/rebuild. If that's the case, picks and prospects, not a soon to be UFA Hall. He'll probably not want to sign with the Habs if he knows they are trying to rebuild/retool right? Part of the incentive to sign in Montreal would be because they have guys like Price already there.
Also just because Primeau is playing well in the AHL doesn't mean we trade Price and tell Primeau he's now the #1 goalie and has to win games for us right away.... that's a terrible way to bring in a young player. He's got to be eased into it and if that's the case we'll have Schneider/Lindgren/Kinkaid tending the net till he's ready.......... I think we can all agree we ain't winning many games like that even with an elite offense.
However I think NJ is in desperate need of a goalie and unless Washington is willing to let Holtby walk this summer and Holtby would want to sign NJ, there aren't a huge amount of goalies to choose from that would look at NJ as a destination of choice right now. So making a big trade for a goalie would make sense. Price definitely would bring some stability and leadership to that position but it all comes down to how desperate NJ are to get good, fast. I know the idea of another 1st overall pick is fun for us but i'm sure management is starting to get in the hot seat over there. Another highly touted prospect isn't going to necessarily equal more wins right away.
If i had to mock up a deal that makes sense and could work of both teams and players would waive it would be:
-Price
-MTL 1st round pick 2020 (top 10-15 finish - Could be worse if the Habs are continuing to downward spiral and/or they trade Price earlier)
-Jake Evans (Decent but nothing special prospect)
for
-Schneider
-NJD 1st round pick 2020 (Top 1-5 finish Not 1st if they know for sure its Lafreniere but assume the pick is not protected so that's the only way it could potentially be 1st for the Habs)
-Michael McLeod (Former 1st rounder but hasn't panned out much yet but has higher potential than Jake Evans has)
NJ gets Carey Price at the cost of Schneider. So instead of paying Price solely for 10.5M they in turn are getting him for Price minus Schneider. So like 4.5M for 3 years. Habs upgrade their moderate 1st to a high quality 1st and swap a prospect in Jake Evans who's decent but not more than a 3rd or 4th line center for a younger, more talented but so far unaccomplished high potential center.
If Habs fans aren't okay with this scenario, then be prepared to never be able to trade Price then because something along these lines would be the return for a player like him and his contract. It would also heavily weigh on Price even be willing to waive his NTC after like 10+ years in Montreal.... Not sure he wants to start a new in his 30's.
