Description
you guys hear that in his rookie season, Babcock thought that Marner wasn't working hard enough, so he made the 19y/o rank the players 1-20 according to effort, and then shared it to the team, absolutely throwing Marner right under the bus with his new teammates. Luckily Marner said that his teammates luckily realized that Marner didn't mean any of it and was forced to do it, but that is f****d. He also never told Marner that the whole team would see it when he made him make the list. Is there any possible side that makes this justifiable? He should have been fired much earlier for that, never mind the other stuff.

Barrie is among the top offensive defenseman in the NHL. Someone will give him 7 years and at least 7.5 mill AAV - I don’t think that someone will be Dubas.

It could very well be. Heard a lot of arguments for gardiner to make more than what he is too... many from me. But there are always oddities. You are right though. If Barrie wants 7.5m x 7 yrs, might be best to walk away.

You are probably right, but I also wonder if Barrie is going to put a premium on a system and situation that makes him comfortable and TO has the ability to offer him a deal before anyone else. If he's happy he could stay but honestly I am not sure he's a wise move long term.

They can also go to arbitration, take a 1 year deal and hit ufa. Or ufa right away if a team doesn’t elect to sign at the arb rate.

If the QO is as high as they are going to be (Meier has a QO at 10 million for crying out loud), why even bother with arbitration. I'd say, this is what I want in a long term deal and if they don't play ball, sign the QO and then wait till the next season when you have FA as a negotiating tactic.

Keep in mind that the cap is projected to go up in a sizeable way when the TV deal is signed next summer and the Seattle expansion will add revenue as well. When those numbers come in, TO won't have their big 3 looking for money for years. Rielly is already planned for as is something for Andersen I'd imagine.

I hope you are right. And I also hope that what I hope will be reality one day. Adjusting the cap according to the tax rate of the local market. Net salary cap

The Leafs have one of the biggest advantages out there with how the cap is now. They can bonus money everything, which is an even greater advantage than the tax free states. Money paid in a bonus means the players get it all upfront and that can be used to invest and over the course of the contract those investments are greater than what the tax advantages are.

I think Tyson Barrie will go towards the money. If leafs don’t pony up, I think he’s gone IMO. The most I could see dubas offering is 7 x 5 and there’s no chance he takes that offer.

Gardiner could have made more, but he was willing to take less to play for a certain team. His back issues hurt his value as well. I’m pretty sure Montreal offered him over 5 mill.

Wow... that is a pretty messed up psychological thing to do to a kid. I wonder if any of this affected contract negotiations...

Alot of things make sense to me now. The team underperforming for the calendar year, pretty low looking morale, Babcocks annual trips to Arizona to smooth things over with AM, Holl in the press box for the year, Josh Lievo,, crazy contract demands, Dubas acquiring players that Babcock wouldnt play in a way that made sense, strange ice time allocation, players looking disinterested/lost this season, half vieled digs by Babcock at certain players, playing favorites with others.. and likely more.

Really glad Keefe is coaching now. And looking forward to what this team can do moving forward.
