im a pens fan.
not sure a 4th and a 6th is far off his true worth. i do think he could bring back a 3rd, but its splitting hairs.
you are actually not very smart if you think we should trade simon. look at his underlying numbers. hes a beast waiting to explode - or at the very least drives play at an elite level.
I'm not knocking Simon's production, but he's no better than the other players in front of him. His real issue is he lacks the physical tools. He doesn't have elite speed, he doesn't have great hands, he doesn't really have a pro shot and he doesn't play with any grit.
At some point your luck runs out on what is happening on the ice. As much as you like to think he "drives play" you don't really have the sample size to say that. You have one year. Eventually the lack of the pro tools shows up. Which is why he slid down the roster. If you can't play fast you can't play in this league, not in any top 6 role. He lacks that kind of skill set, which is why you see people putting him on 3rd lines. But there is a reality that you can't hang onto people not capable of filling those top spots when you need to open up spots on the team for the youth. You can look at what is sitting in WBS, players like Bjorkqvist who are knocking on the door for a spot. They are players who do have some of those intangibles. Almeida is another one. By next ear you might have Hallander.
You can't clutch onto guys who are 3rd liners blocking paths.
You look on the LW, He's not better than Jake and Galchenyuk. Can you say he's better than Tanev, we'll see but I doubt it. Just on pure speed and grit alone I think Tanev out plays him.
You have to win the 1 on 1s, not just be a system guy if you are going to really win. He played 71 games last year, he had 8 goals. That's not the kind of production that wins games. Moving him isn't a huge issue.
