One max contract to a star player can transform an NBA team, just look at the raptors. The NBA is a completely different box of frogs. The max term won't change, it doesn't need to. Options I doubt will find much support from either side.

Let's use Edmonton as an example for this discussion. McDavid has 6 or 7 years left on his 8 year deal. If he had options after 3 years he could just opt out, become an FA and then leave with the franchise getting nothing for him. On the flip side, you have Lucic/Neal. Obviously the team would welcome having the option of releasing the player but do you think players would ever want the owners to have that sort of power? Lucic would have had his contract released a year ago and if he was signed in the off season who he get anything close to the 6 million a year he's going to make for the next 4 years?

The way I look at it, the owners would be against options would be bitterly against giving options to players while only star players would be in favour of options since they will always be in demand. The middle and lower classes would be against it because they are the ones who'l suffer.

Would be aware of the possibilities of a opt out after X number of season. Depth players wouldn’t be affect. I think that this could really help the game. First not all option in nfl, nba, mlb is use most of the time they just continue the contract, i don’t see why it would be different in nhl. If a player is happy with is situation there no reason he want out, idem for the team. I really think that this system could work. Even if you disagree, its working in other league so it could work in nhl too. They will always be someone’s who will be against a new system or new ideas. Last time the convention wasn’t approved at a 100% by players. This is democracy and everyone has a right to choose.
