But how do we replace him?
Look at Toronto trade: Tyson Barrie
The key is salary retention. We just have to find a team who is not contending and willing to do it. BriseBois already tried to trade for Ristolainen at 50% retention, unfortunately they said no to our offer. But it's possible, it's just takes time and a little bit of luck.
Another possibility is: Convincing Serg for a bridge deal at really low $$$ value. Look at San Jose + Labanc.
If both of these methods will fail, then you can trade for a solid defender with a entry-level contract, at least for 2 more years. If the player is projected to be worse than Serg, but still kinda top4'ish potential, we don't even need to overpay that much.
Also, there is the possibility that similar to Shattenkirk or Sekera, we try to solve the D issue by filling it each year with 1 year cheap contracts for buyout players, who can still play solid hockey, except not for 5-8 million $ contracts on that said team, who did the buyout.
This works, because everyone wants to win the cup, who had suffered the buyout from a bad team, and until Tampa leading the odds at the bookies and by experts with a highest chance to win the cup, they are willing to take less money, for a cup run.
Foote is not ready yet, but it would be amazing, if for the 2020/2021 season he will be. I just have a feeling he needs a lot more time to develop into a solid everyday NHL player, by looking at the signings lately.
I would be even happy if he can solve the 3rd pair RHD issue for us for the 2020/2021 season, but i afraid he might not be ready in 1 year for that role. But you never know, lot can happen in 1 year. I root for Foote to make the next step and will watch his stats closely in the AHL. My hope is that he gets at least 1-5 games in NHL this season, when we have injuries, and we just try him vs like a team like Ottawa, because that team tries to tank next year for sure, for the round 1 - pick nr. 1.
So yeah, there are couple of tricks to solve the D for the 2020/2021 season, and i have full confident in our GM that he will solve it. And i won't even feel bad if we lose some trades(can't win'em all u know?), if that means we have a solid D again for that season.
