With Marner Obviously he Can Sign a 1-8 year deal. Right off the bat a 1,4, 5 year deal are out. 1 means you need to do this headache over again next year, 4 brings him right to UFA and 5 is when matthews, Nylander are up. Ideally you want to lock in Marner long term, but with all the rumors going around, he does not want that unless its for McDavid/Matthews Money. So removing that we are left with a 2-3 year bridge deal.
A bridge makes sense because first, lower AAV means leafs have a better shot keeping Barrie/Muzzin next year, or if magic had it get another D this year. (I dont think he will sign with the leafs, but why hasnt Gardiner signed anywhere?) Second, He is still an RFA. 3rd, will marners AAV after a 2-3 year deal be that much higher than what he is asking now? Probably not, and with a higher cap that would be better. 4. Marner and Auston are BFFs, so overlapping thier contracts gives matthews more incentive to stay.
What Bridge Deal Makes sense. Looking Back: Nikita Kucherov- Signed a 6.53% of Cap 3 year bridge deal with Tampa. For 4.8AAV
Offering Marner the same would be 5.3Mil AAV. now that seems a bit low. Marners ELC was overall better than Kucherov during his, and there are some Tax things Flordia can do, if you think that matters.
So I've increase it to 8.8% of Cap, 7.1683Mil AAV (Because why not have your favourite numbers 16 and 93 in your Salaray). And Boom.
Neuvirth Beats out Hutch for a job.
Gauthier: Proved to be a capable 4C this year shockingly, but he isnt needed and can be replaced. Dubas probably trades a few guys like goat in order to not be at the 50 contract limit.
Hence why i am not using 6.5%. That would be rediculuos. Ive increased it over 2.3%. A Kuch deal would be 5.3Mil AAV for Marner not 7.1
I have a feeling it's heading towards a 3 yr deal worth around 9M aav. That's an overpay for what he's worth today and it's my guess that will be increasingly true once the other rfas start to sign.
But if Mitch is dug in at 3yr/10M it seems like a compromise both ways, the leafs can make it work, and it compares to a 3 yr offer that was on the table for AM. But oh man, if he gets a deal like that he better come outta the gates producing... cause if he's feeling sensitive and disrespected now just wait til he sees how the fan base turns on him if he doesn't put up numbers..
The other option that I can see happening is that Ferris and Paul are actually deluded and they continue to try to bully tactic the leafs and Marner ends up sitting for the year.

You know a deal is bad when you say, He better come out of the gates producing. AKA he better be a 94+ point player for the entire contract length, I sure really do hope it wasnt a fluke and his points didnt get inflated by playing with JT

Just be clear, I think a 3yr/9M aav is a big overpay. Its just where I see things possibly heading right now if what's getting leaked to the media has an ounce of truth to it I.e the rumour of Ferris countering with a 10M/3yr from the leafs apparent original offer of 10M/8yr. And the subsequent leak of the leafs 8.75M/3yr offer (and we really don't know if any of it true).
But if there is truth to this stuff then I could see a 9M/3yr as a possibility. Keep him lined up with JT and hope their chemistry keeps working, and then in the last year of his deal trade him for some stud elc and picks...
Cause there's no way I want to hear all this Mitch noise again when Reilly is up for a new contract in 3.. In terms of value to the team and team impact Mo is way more important than Mitch. Despite what Paul thinks. Besides, Captain Morgan is way too classy to get one upped by a repeat of what's currently shaking out
