Winnipeg says hard no. And Buffalo can't afford Laine, even with Reinhart's salary going the other way.

I would say if you ask the average hockey fan they would say WPG says no just because of Laines goal scoring ability (which is extremely valuable no doubt).

On the other hand if you ask the analytical crowd they will tell you Buffalo says no because Reinhart does so many things well (think Bergeron extra lite). Reinhart probably will never score 40, but he'll score 20-30 per year on average and isn't a complete liability in his own end.

I think this is a case where each fan base would probably go to bat for their guy and say their team would say no.

Laine can really fill it up, but is basically a liability everywhere else on the ice. Reinhart, just as OP says, is a more complete player, but he is also getting better every year in the league.

As a Sabres fan, I would hope Buffalo does not make this trade.

As a Sabres fan this is the perfect explanation as to why I would say an absolute no way from the Sabres side. Sampson offers so much more than Laine and his goal scoring prowess. Sampson is a player who is improving on a yearly basis..... his development as an all around player has been fun to watch... his hockey IQ is off the charts.... his ability to put his teammates in the right position is a thing of beauty.... his defensive zone awareness is on the improve.... he needs to work on his talent to win face offs..... he can play with any type of player..... he is a GREAT locker room presence.

People are too harsh on Laine and this deal shows it. The guy has 110 NHL goals and he is 21 years old. he does have to work on the defensive side of his game, but that is doable. You can't work on being an elite goal scorer. Most guys his age are finishing up their junior career to starting out in the AHL.

I'd consider it a fair deal in here when one of two conditions are fulfilled: one is where both fanbases like it, and the other one is where both fanbases dislikes it. Based on the comments here, this post falls to the latter.

It's not a bad deal because of value. It's a bad deal because both fanbases like what their own player brings in.
