the real reason they bought out shattenkirk

Description
pretty much their only other option was to buy out smith and staal (considering no trades were happening).

I agree that Shattenkirk was the worst person to buy out based off of ability.

Look at the long term outlook for Smith and Staal vs the long term outlook for shattenkirk.

we save more money in ever year which will help us resign all of our RFAs and potentially UFAs. It was a money decision, not a "you are worse than staal/smith" decision

Funny how Ranger fans wanted Shatty so bad, And no that he didn't work out. They wanted to ditch him.

if you actually read what i said this is not the case. Just like every other team tries to do, we upgraded. He became a liability solely because of the money he made, not because of his ability. As i stated, his buyout is the best for us long term which is the only reason he's gone.

btw, i thought Trouba wasn't signing long term in NY tears of joy
apparently, it was both his and kelly's first choice each.. so much for your sister in laws, cousins, dog walkers cousin 3 times removed's fortune teller.

You don’t save money every year, how about next year when Shattenkirk accounts for more than 6M of cap space?

Smith will be buried either way. That's right, Shatty was/is worse than Staal, believe it or not! I've seen every game and Shatty certainly is painful to watch, unfortunately for us and new fans. RIP hometown hero/CAP KILLER lol

laugh First off i've never ever stated that it was 100% certainty that Trouba was heading to Detroit, I said Detroit, Florida and the Rangers were his 3 teams of choice and that was correct. His fiance is getting her residency there in New York City the reason why Trouba chose the Rangers and only the Rangers. Rangers are still a joke and i bet Detroit wins a cup before the Rangers do. They sure wont win one with Lundqvist as their starter that's for sure.

LOL SAVE MONEY???? What?! Please Look at this again:
Shattenkirk, Kevin
Year 1: $1,483,333 = Savings of: $5,166,667
Year 2: $6,083,333 = Savings of: $566,667
Year 3: $1,433,333 = Savings of: $5,166,667
Year 4: $1,433,333 = Savings of: $5,166,667

Yes, they are saving $5,000,000+, but next they will be cap crunched for another 4 years no matter what because of the two big signings: Trouba/Panarin.

Staal, Marc
Year 1: $2,900,000 = Savings of: $2,800,000
Year 2: $3,700,000 = Savings of: $2,000,000
Year 3: $1,200,000 = Savings of: $4,500,000
Year 4: $1,200,000 = Savings of: $4,500,000

Smith, Brendan
Year 1: $970,833 = Savings of: $3,379,157
Year 2: $3,145,833 = Savings of: $1,204,167
Year 3: $1,145,833 = Savings of: $3,204,167
Year 4: $1,145,833 = Savings of: $3,204,167

The only year they save on Shattenkirk compared to other buyouts is his first year and that is only against Staal. If they bought out Smith, then they would have saved the most money out of all of them based on their salary in each of their contracts. The only reason they bought him out is because they got Trouba, Fox, and soon to be Deangelo who are more than willing to run a powerplay. Shattenkirk was brought here for two reasons: 1. Powerplay (since the Rangers had the worst powerplay the season before) 2. Offensive ability (Since they had no offensive ability on the backend, they needed someone to quarterback the offensive side of things). These are the only reasons that this was the case. He had an unfortunate run as a Ranger and I feel bad for him because he is a very good player. He was hurt for half of his first year, and his second year he only had half the off season to train since the injury from the previous year resulted in surgery.

They aren't saving money on year 3 and 4 of those buyouts, it's costing them something compared to a contract that would otherwise be over and done.

No, what you said was is that he wanted to go to UFA and that NY would NEVER be able to sign him long term. You also scoffed at deals including Lias/Howden+Pionk+1st but looks like you were wrong there too.

Now, where to begin. I'll leave it to the younger players (u25) and long term players

Panarin> Larkin
Zibanejad> Mantha
Kravtsov > Veleno
Kakko > Zadina
Chytil > Rasmussen
Fox > Seider
Miller > Mcisaac
DeAngelo > Bowey
Any of Shesterkin or Georgiev or Lundqvist > Any of Howard or Bernier or Pickard or Larsson or ...
Lastly, I'm going to say Buchnevich outperforms Athanasiou this year - players have been within reaching distance their entire careers

Notice how i left both trouba, skeji, howden, andersson, and other players under 25 off of this list that the rangers have? You talk about futures, but the NYR look much better that Det at this point in time

the cost of shattenkirk buyout is less than the cost of a staal+smith buyout. I'm not arguing that Shattenkirk is a norris trophy candidate, i'm saying he's better than staal or smith.. please read more in depth

This is correct. And then when you factor in the cost of a replacement player too - two players in the 2nd scenario - the numbers become even further apart.

I am replying to the fact that you say they save money. I understand that you were saying that it wasn't a factor of being a good/better player than Staal/Smith. The point I was trying to get across is that they are actually spending more with this buyout and it will make them go into more of a cap crunch than they already are in. Honestly, I hope that this isn't true as it hasn't been officially posted yet by the team or Elliotte Freidmann, so I am not sold on the Rangers actually buying him out.

how are they spending more with the buyout? I get in terms of real dollars but in terms of cap dollars they save decent amount this year. Yes it's unfortunate next year but 1) there will probably be a lockout and 2) they really don't have any issues with cap next year (since Namestnikov will be off the books for 4m and girardi's buyout costs 2m less than this year).

I'm not saying this like "you're an idiot", I'm just trying to understand your process of thinking...

Shattenkirk cost
Year 1: $1,483,333
Year 2: $6,083,333
Year 3: $1,433,333
Year 4: $1,433,333

Staal + Smith cost:
Year 1: $3,670,883
Year 2: $6,845,833
Year 3: $2,345,833
Year 4: $2,345,833

To me it seems like they save almost a million in years 3 and 4 which is when we will need flexibility due to Kravtsov/Kakko/Fox/Chytil etc all needing new deals

You just combined both of them together. look at the buyout of SMITH ONLY and compare that to Shattenkirk's. THEN Look at the buyout of STAAL ONLY and compare that to Shattenkirk's. They are giving up money every year except the first year, which is still over the amount they would have to pay SMITH if they bought him out. PLUS in year 3+4 they actually lose more money because they have to not only pay him and Girardi, but they have to pay the young guys on their 2nd contracts along with finding replacements for guys through Free Agency. This process of a rebuild will not take longer because Shattenkirk was bought out. it will be 4 - 5 years before they become a competitive playoff team because of this buyout.

Yeah but a buyout of either individually is not enough for the rangers to get cap compliant this year after resigning DeAngelo and Lemiuex. Per my original statement, it was always buying out both
