Could it be done
If a team is serious about winning a cup why would they sign any player (let alone multiple like the leafs) to a 10m+ contract. no team with a 10m player has a won the cup. it simply eats up to much of the cap space. you wind up with maybe 2 good lines and the rest are either old vets or cheap young guys. I cant see Ep40 getting Rantanen $$ EP40 hasnt cracked 30g in a season or been the same level of PPG that Mikko has.

OMG it what world would any team pay Barrie more the EP or QH(not to mention horvat boeser or miller).they have better places to spend their money than on Barrie. plus canucks are not signing Demko to a 2 year contract that would walk him straight to UFA status.

why would the canucks sign EP and Qh to 5 year deals that walk them straight to UFA. that would put them in the same situation as the leafs with Matthews

markstrom isnt getting 7m with a flat cap (and if somebody offers it let him go) and who is Vancouver trading that has a NMC? eriksson has a NTC so he doesnt have to be protected in the expansion

how much more would they have to give up cause demko and 2nd are worth more than the 1st that toronto gave up to get rid of marleau and there is less cap hit and less actual money paid for loui after the trade deadline

Canucks 2020-21 Roster
no chance Gaudette gets more than Virtanen especially that much. JV is going to get closer to 3.25m . Ferland has a NMC that is still in effect this year so you cant send him down as he would have to pass through waivers and he cant due to the NMC. Canucks will probably either trade Stecher or let him walk and use one of Rafferty,Fantenberg or Juolevi and save cap space for other area's

it doesn't make any sense for the Canucks to trade both Sutter and Beagel. they need someone other than Horvat to win defensive zone faceoffs. everytime both of them have been hurt his offense tanks because he spends all his time taking faceoffs in his own zone instead of in the offensive zone. why would Gaudette get more aav then Virtanen?

what could be their offseason
those are overpays for both Gaudette and Virtanen probably 1M on each especially on 3yr deals . I think Stecher is going to be traded to free up cap space (to someplace like TO or Winnipeg ) and they can use Rafferty or Benn on the right side
with the big signings they need to do they cant afford to overpay for AG, JV or Stecher.

great idea to trade away both Sutter and Beagle so that Horvat has to take all the defensive zone faceoffs. that's work out great for him and the team when they have been hurt before .

Deadline Deals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Penjays66</b></div><div>This isn't "crippling" the system. Canucks still have Woo, Hoglander, Tryamkin, Podkolzin, Lind, Rafferty, and Dipietroin the system. Still really solid. Ok AA is a -43 in Detroit. Detroit SUCKS!!!!! Crosby, McDavid and anyone else would be a -43 as well playing in Detroit. Don't even look at the +/- rating. AA is fast , 2 way player, and can actually play Centre. Gaudette is a glorified winger and sucks in his own zone.</div></div>
so because we have some young guys in the system you want to punt the next 2 drafts? these trades do not put us over the top as a contender. Canucks are better off holding steady they are building the right way. why trade away our best defensive defenseman(who plays great with Hughes) and all the rest for 2 UFA's and say what you want about Detroit but Gaudette is still younger costs less and his stats are better. how much do you think its going to cost to resign AA . I get you're trying to dump Louie but lets not mortgage the future.1st and 2nd round picks are worth to much(not to mention the actual NHL players involved) in a salary cap world to just throw 2 years worth away for that type of return

there is no chance the canucks give up that much for 2 UFA's, no way they go without 1st & 2nd round picks 2 years in a row that's how you cripple the system.not to mention why would Vancouver trade Gaudette then replace him with a more expensive player with worse stats(not mention -43) uggh no thanks.
none of these trades make sense

WOW none of these make any sense. Ducks are not trading Kesler who is on LTIR for LE. why would Van trade Virtanen for Cousins. Virtanen is getting better and better and plays with speed . You want to give up Stecher for a 5th j9should be able to get more than that(think toronto) just to get rid of SB ( his contract runs out at the end of 20-21). Canucks are better off keeping Tryamkin(especially for a 6th) instead of over paying for Dillon

Cap Hell 4 - 4-tune favours the bold
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Butlrr</b></div><div>I disagree with nearly all of this, obviously.
1. If Jay Beagle was an effective NHL player, he still makes 3 million a year to play on the fourth line (for two more seasons!), is 34 years old and is on a team with cap issues. It’s worse than that though. He is a poor even strength player. His line has been utterly destroyed since November. The biggest issue the team has right now is two defensively poor bottom six lines.
2. The Canucks can either protect Markstrom or Demko, not both. I doubt Markstrom signs without a NMC (why the heck would he?). If they sign Markstrom, it’s highly unlikely Demko isn’t claimed if he’s on the team.
3. Look at recent goalie trades for value. Demko for two picks and salary relief seems fair to me, but clearly we see Beagle differently.
4. Leivo is one of the few effective bottom six forwards the team has and got injured at the worst possible time in terms of maximizing his contract in free agency. He’s found money. In fact, I’d argue that (if he stayed healthy) he’s the sixth best forward on the roster today.
5. I’m going to assume you’ve followed the Canucks prior to 2017, but if you haven’t, having young players integrate seamlessly like Boeser, Pettersson, and Hughes is the exception. To expect Hoglander to walk onto the roster and make a positive contribution (hell, even assuming he doesn’t go to Utica!) is beyond optimistic.
6. Think about how you would make the team better while keeping space for Hughes and EP’s second contracts without removing significant salary first. Gotta walk before you can run.</div></div>
so you would rather resign a 30yo goalie and punt 24yo one for cap space and 3rd and 4th round picks no thanks. QH and EP need to be resigned next year and there is over 20m coming off the books at that point. then the following year there is another almost 15m coming off in time to resign BB. hoglander doesn't have to step in be like BB QH and EP have been the last 3 years they are deep enough that he can learn and he may play the up and down to Utica that Gaudette did as the roster isn't devoid of talent with out Leivo. there are young players on the cusp of the NHL roster and the vets give these players time to mature without ridiculous expectations put on them.
how do you figure Stetcher is going to sign for that cheap. he is probably traded at the draft to free up space on the blueline
as for watching the canucks prior to 2017 ive been watching them long enough to remember them going to the finals in 82/94 and 2011.
The Canucks are not going to make wholesale changes like this unless they are getting a major player back and none of these trades help

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Butlrr</b></div><div>It’s me. I think management expect he will replace Stetcher or Tanev.
Yeah it’s bad because as people I really like the guys I’m trying to get rid of.
Don’t look at me. Dumping a bad contract and getting a 2nd (or here, two picks) is about as good as I see it getting for Demko. The Canucks have minimal leverage with the expansion draft around the corner and the goalie trade market has changed in the past several seasons.
As for Tanev, he kills penalties; it’s only a matter of time.</div></div>
why would the canucks want to trade away a top PK centre(who ranks in the top 5 in faceoff %) and our goalie of the future for a 3rd and 4th . how does the expansion draft hurt us canucks only have 2 NMC's (1 forward and 1 dman) so they will be able to protect the ones they want(ep,bo,bb,miller,jv ferland w/nmc, ) and they still have another forward spot plus 2 d spots after Myers. these trades do not help the team get better . let leivo sign elsewhere if they don't trade him. they have hoglander ready to step in after this season(and podklozin next year) resign Markstrom without a NMC and protect the one you want to move forward at the draft and we are still in good shape.

there was nothing rationale about it.Habs would have to add multiple 1st round picks add webber, mete and Suzuki then they would have to take back Loui and Sutter for Van to even consider trading those 2 guys
even if van was to trade one of their franchise level players it would gut the Habs just look at previous such trades
only way van does a trade like this is if Bergevin has compromising photos of Benning Vancouver owners as leverage
