Description
It fits assuming a cap of 85M. If nylander plays as expected (a stud, thats what I expect, last year was a blip) then Kapanen becomes expendable. or nylander can be moved out if kapanen takes another step forward.. regardless, it just takes moving one of those guys to theoretically make it all fit. Rielly will be hard to extend, but I think its safe to assume the cap will go up even further after expansion. Woll needs to be ready to replace Andersen after his contract but im looking too far ahead.. just seeing how 2020-2021 looks and I think we can fit both Muzzin and Barrie..

Woll probably isn't the backup but replace with any other 800k backup.

bottom 6 looks weak but similar to what we will have this year.. Spezza probably isn't back but replace with a league min center.

Technically if you went with 20 skaters and just used callups as needed from the marlies, you could fit Kapanen.. I left some buffer in the cap to add to signings where maybe i underestimated.

Yea cap allows for that too, and I would think we are about to find out early this season that Moore will be a capable replacement. Good call

mikheyev is making 925k this year. he likely wont take a paycut for 2 years if he is playing in the nhl. Kerfoot is about to get 3.5m in Arbitration. He also doesnt get a 3x3.33 deal unless he really sucks this year. I dont think Dermott goes that cheap either probably be closer to 2.5-3 range if he logs real minutes. Kapanen would need to put up 60-70 points to get you a 1st round pick back.

Fair enough, Mikheyev can be replaced by any other 4th line guy close to league minimum, Kerfoot sure, I have built in some space to account for him potentially getting higher (I am not sure the leafs should go there personally) and Dermott at 2.5 would still fit assuming the Cap goes to 85M. valid points on your part though, its why i left over 2M in wiggle room

I really don't think you need 60+ points to be worth a first. I'd pay a mid-to-late first for Kapanen right now (20 goals, 45-50 points)

One last point, i know GMs were optimistic about cap being at 83m this year, cap friendly had it at 83m for weeks, which would have been a 3.5m jump from last year like you have planned here. What happens if instead of being 85m cap its another 2m raise and cap is only at 83.5? Im beyond nervous that this cap stagnates after these massive contracts start getting thrown around and then we see a lockout in 2 years frown

then you stand firm when trying to sign the Dermott's and Kerfoot's or replace them for slightly cheaper talent. it was the players union that chose the lower salary cap to reduce escrow, so use that as a bargaining chip to shave off 250k from a salary (Im sure the players don't accept this lol)

its more likely to get a prospect and 2 seconds over getting a first. those first rounders are coveted by ALL teams. You only send firsts for elite talent. Look at prior deals. not many first rounders going back for guys that arent or werent once elite players. Similar scenario with ryan dzingel last year. ottawa got duclair and 2 seconds back. andrew shaw just had 19 and 47 he got a 2nd and a 7th. I just dont see a first heading back unless he puts up 60 points is all.

Shaw got a second and a third.. and I agree not as many first's sent out recently, The point was Kapanen can be moved to make space and sure get a 2nd and a 3rd back. I Think i even mentioned in the trade I don't think Kapanen gets a 1st.. But he would be easy to move.

oh 100% agree, i was just saying he probably wont net you a first unless he has a career year which is possible depending on where he slots in.

If he has a career year, I would argue you then trade Nylander and open up even more cap no? im thinking Willy proves all the haters wrong this year.. unless babs decides Kerfoot can't play center and decided to put Willy 3rd line C.. sigh

Depends on what the team thinks nylander and kap project to. and how close they project. If they are only a 5 point difference and you think you can keep kap at cheaper than nylander you move nylander. having 3 guys at or around 10-11m cap hits isnt going to be easy to manage either though cap going up helps a little bit but then everyone else wants a bigger piece of the pie.
